My last name is Menoken. Unlike many people that are members of a tribe I actually have a real Native American name. My grandfather was half Native American and half German/Pa Dutch. He told me that his family was originally from North Dakota and that someone named High Bull was his relative. He died 20 years ago. He had pictures of his relatives so I know he was telling the truth. I have been searching for years to find information on my family. My grandfather is listed as a Mulatto on the census. In the 1903s he wanted to start a business. NJ told him Indians can't own anything in NJ so instead of trying to pass for white he said he was Negro. His business was very successful. He started out selling wood, then kerosene and eventually oil. He also purchased race horses. Is there anyone out there willing to help me?

What part of North Dakota is he from? My dad and I are enrolled with the 3 Affiliated tribes and I have many many relatives up there. So if you can supply me with some names I might be able to help.

Many of us have real names
Menoken ND is located about 10 miles east of Bismarck North Dakota. The Indian camp that was located in the area was Mandan and then Yanktonais. There were battles in the area.
So are you Mandan or Yanktonais? That would be the first question. Which census is he in? What year?

Most importantly, what was your ancestor's name(Indian and/or English )? what were your parents names? this may help us to search for your ancestor(s). do you have an obituary for him that would help us to help you?
