if anyone has anything that can help clear this up, i would greatly appreciate it. i have sworn statements to all these things: 1) CETANHOTEWIN aka CETANWINNA and POOR BEAR are the parents of REBECCA PHILBRICK and CLINTON PHILBRICK. this in a sworn testimony by rebecca. 2) CETANWINNA and WIZUN are the parents of REBECCA PHILBRICK and CLINTON PHILBRICK. this in a sworn testimony by david boy, in front of rebecca and clinton, having to do with the estate of CETANWINNA in nebraska. 3) obituary in the IAPE OAYE states that , WIZUN, LOUIS COURSOL died october 6, 1897, in crow creek. probate papers i have for POOR BEAR state that he died october 11, 1897 in crow creek. i could find no obituary in the iape oaye for poor bear. this seems to indicate that LOUIS COURSOL / WIZUN / POOR BEAR are the same person. does anyone have any light to shed on this? i would appreciate any information that anyone has.

How would louis coursoll be related to joseph coursoll? If Louis coursoll is really poor bear then he is my great-great-great grandpa. my great-great grandfather is clinton philbrick.

vnakacita: you need to contact peacekeeper and ask her if she canfind a baptismal record for Rebecca Philbrick. That would be your link. Or you can go online and look at the church registers for South dakota. The websiete address is in hte Baptismal equest secition. You also should have looked for Rebecca Philbrick's Probate paers. Now you can only possibly find them at the Historical Scoiety in Pierre,SD on Microfilm.

I have been looking into the Philbrick side for a couple of years now and can not find a connection to the MN census. We are from the Clinton Philbrick side of the family. We know that Clinton and Elizabeth wer married in MN but then moved to Santee.
I don't have my notes in front of me but thought Rebecca was married to Adam Elk, but they did not have any children that I have been able to find record of. If you know of any children they may have had together please contact me.
The only information I have been able to find on PoorBear is from Crow Creek. But I have not had a lot of luck getting records from there

But I have not had a lot of luck getting records from there Dawn I am passing on the information written to me sometime back in my search for the Lovejoy family. In the Cheyenne River Agency their are some Poor Bear surname living in the 1900's. They are: Antoine Poor Bear born Aug 1824, age 75 in 1900, South Dakota Fannie Poor Bear born Jan 1837 age 63 in 1900, South Dakota Felix Benoist an Grandson born Mar 1885 South Dakota. Thomas Poor Bear age 67 in 1910 born about 1843 in South Dakota has married 4 times and was married for 20 years. His wife: Julia Poor Bear age 71 in 1910 born 1839 in South Dakota has been married twice. The reason that I am mentioning Cheyenne River Sioux Agency Indians, is that Robert Philbrick, the husband of Rebecca Philbrick served as an Indian Scout on that Reservation in 1870's and he had seven family members listed under him, no names given, only total of family number.

Hi, browsing through the internet, using my family name, I've found this page, which was a big surprise as my name come from Lituania, my family has its roots in the region of Vilnius (capital of the state, formerly Wilno in the poland time and Vilna in the Czar time...). The family emigrated in successives waves from 1905 to 1930 in France where I am the last male to wear this name. I'd like to know if Louis Wizun Coursoll aka "Poor Bear"has something to be linked to us. Where did he come from? Was he a native or a metis or an european? Maybe the name of this man and mine are purely coïncidental but I can tell already that this name is not frequent even in the original place where our roots appeared. Thank you for all informations.

I have never been able to find Poor Bears parents. We beleive he is from the coursoll family and may have come from Canada. He lived on The Santee Reservation for a number of years, and then moved to Crow Creek Reservation where he died. Most of his children used the Philbrick last name. Sorry I do not have much on him.

I don't know if this will help, we have some Poorbear's living on our reservation, Spirit Lake. In Fort Totten, ND. And we also have very few Philbrick's on our reservation. I don't know who their ancestors are. You might try and get some info from the BIA in Ft Totten if your related to them, they may help you. I do know the Poorbear's were related to Mathonin's, I am not spelling Mathonin right. If you would check in ancestory.com you will probably find the Poorbear's in Benson County, ND in 1940's and 1950's and 60's. Another source of information would be Louie Garcia. If you give me your email I will get permission from him to give his email to you. My email is: eunicedavidson50@hotmail.com

I did some more looking and there was an Enos Poor Bear who was the 5th member of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council in Pine Ridge in 1958-1962, Tribal Vice-President from 1962-1964, Tribal President from 1964-1966 and again in 1968-1970. He was the Eagle Nest District Council Member from 1978-1980 and there was a Theodore Poor Bear who was the Pass Creek District Council Member from 1966-1968. I have no idea how they were related. There was also a Tom Poor Bear who served as Seargent at Arms from 1998-2000. There is a Mark Poor Bear who live in Kyle, SD. You might try the Enrollment office in Pine Ridge. I haven't had any luck but it's worth a try. Their # is:605-867-1321. They may be able to direct you to someone who has any information on the family since there was quite a bit of service to the Oglala Tribe. Good luck and I hope this helps.
