On a chart Mr. Brill drew of cloudman's family Tree, he has listed as one of his sons, Hupacokamaza. it may be a misspellingof Rupacokamaza. anyway, I did some checking on him and I found that there was a Rupacokamaza that was a son-in-law of Cloudman, and a nephew of chief Red Cloud. this rupacokamaza was killed by the chippewas on July 2,1839. His death sparked the famous Battle of rum Creek, during which chief Red Cloud and one of his sons were killed.
there is another Rupacokamaza that was a Wahpekute soldier and was oneof those who signed the Treaty of September, 1872.
finally, thereis the Rupacokamaza aka Eli Abraham of Santee Reservation, that is on War Eagle's tree. he was the son of Shooting Pine and Kumkoomhdewin. I don't know if he is related to the other two Rupacokamazas, in any way or not.

To keep track of some of these people, I have started a genealogy file on only the Sioux people. It is extremely difficult. I am wondering if you, or anyone can advise me of an easy way to keep track of the names. These are not Dick and Jane Jones!
First you have the Sioux name, then the translation to English, and then the white mans version. We might find:
(Sioux name ), OLD EYE, Kaposia Man
So, in order to look up this person in an index, and keep track of him, how would you do that? It is hard enough for me to keep track of the Dick and Janes, how in the world do you guys do this? Thank you, for all your patience with me.
In awe, DarkWolfe

What I usually do is use the English name, and then the Indian name as a middle name, like this, John Indianname Smith, and then I put the English translation in the notes section. That seems to work for me.

darkwolf: i have made up an index. If the person has an English name as well as his Indian name, I put the English name first, followed by aka Indian name / English Translation of Indian name if there is one. I list his/her vital data, parents, spouse, her parents, and the children. marriage date, andany pertinent information re. each person. others I have are what i get on them from ancestry,or familysearch,or my other genealogy haunts. Otherwise, I put the Indian name followed by the English Translation. quite a few of them died befroe they got an English name. If I find more than one person with the same name I assign a number to them, to keep them straight. right now I have 7 women named Cekpawin in my index. they are numbered From 1 to7 next to their name. then I have a cross index of the parents from the 1902 Santee Census with their children and their spouses if indicated. I have another cross index that has each a person's Indian name and English name or English translation of the indian name(if tht person didn't have an English name like Joe blow, etc) eacperson

Hermin1 wrote- "Hupacokamaza. it may be a misspellingof Rupacokamaza". There is no "r" in the Dakota alphabet. "h" according to the Dakota dictionary by Riggs states that "h" (with a dot over it), represents a strong surd guttural resembling the Arabic kha. Formerly represented by "r". The use of "r" in names seems to be the older phoenetic spelling, and is why we so often see (for example) cloud- mahpiya, spelled marpiya. Any time you see an "r" in Dakota, you can safely assume it later became an "h" (with the dot).

I saw a font the other day which was in an Indian dialect, no wonder some of the letters were missing. I shall investigate this further, yes most interesting! Thank you Vicky. Your once again amazed cousin, DarkWolfe

There are two Chief Cloudman of the Dakota. One was the father of Solomon Two Stars and is the Wahpeton Chief. The other was the father in law of Many Lightnings and was the Chief who's village was originally within the Bloomington area. He was married to Canpadutawin who was the sister of Chief Red Bird. If I remember correctly, that is Cloudman's son, not son in law.
