fplks: I believe someone just recently posted a request for information on a person with the surname Monjeau. I am sorry but I can't find the posting. Anyway, I would suggest that those seeking informtion on this surname, should first go to www.familysearch.com and see if they can find the information they need there. theni would recommend that they got to www.rootsweb.com, and at the World Connect Projet link type in the name of the person and see if anyone hs submitted a tree for him/her.

Thanks very much for the links about the Monjeau family. Some of this was new to me, some I have already seen. I have looked at Dale Ebersol's site and my ancestor, 'Nanna Coussi' or 'Tranamimirsavaii' who married Joseph Monjeau, appears on some of those family trees, but they don't agree with each other about who she is and how she's related to Wabasha.
I just wondered if anyone on this site knows anything, or also, if anyone knows what her name, Tranamimirsavaii, means.
Thanks so much for all the wonderful information that is on this site.

sh225: there is a tree for the Monjeau family in progress that has been submitted to www.rootsweb.com at its World Connect Project Link. I typed antoine Monjeau in the Search Engine and looked for the tree that had Antoine Monjeau, his father's name and Nan or ann coussi as the mother. make sure you pick the tree that hasd the blue face below antoine's name, which means his descendts are also provided. The submitter of the tree's email address is also listed at the top of the tree that you can contact. The tree appears to be quite large,as it has 12,791 entries sofar, and it was just recently updatedin the last two weeks. It also has an index of names. I did not see the Indian name for Ann Coussi on it. Maybe the submitter can help you with that. According to this tree: Ann Coussi was born 1801/02 in Minnesota area. she died@ 1863 in Ravenna, Dakota county,Minn. was first married to Francois LaBatte(b. 1799/1900 in Prairie duChien, Indiana terr.) before 1825 and they divorced before 1828. they had 2 sons, Michael born about 1825 and Joseph born May 1825/1826 In Mendota Dakota ,unorganized US Terr. Her second husband was Joseph Monjeau b. 1900/1801 in Lower Canada. they were married 1828 at St. Croix, Minn. Terr. their children were:: Sophia, born 1832/33 in wisconsin Antoine born 1832/33 in Wisconsin Edward born 1837/38 in Minnesota Area Louis born 1839/40 in Minnesota area Harriet bor 1841/42 in wisconsin According to the tree, Sophia and antoine have descendents.

It would seem that the Wabasha family tree that i have is not much different than the one youve seen. The name Nanna Coussi seems to me to be a bit like a french spelling of Kunsi and of course Nanna could be another name or nickname for grandma.. the other name you mention (keeping in mind, I am no expect only someone who reads alot of census and annuity dakota histroy information) doesnt appear to fit the type of Dakota spelling of names that I would expect to see. If this is coming from a handwritten source you might want to double check to see if some of the letters are incorrect. We are often dependant on oral history to know these things and as it is proper to address ones relatives by their relationship we sometimes are left with family history that states only Kunsi, Caske, or Winona. Thats my two cents for what its worth!

We are often dependant on oral history to know these things and as it is proper to address ones relatives by their relationship we sometimes are left with family history that states only Kunsi, Caske, or Winona. Thats my two cents for what its worth! That's brilliant. Of course, 'Nanna Coussi', which is sometimes spelled 'Nanna Couchi'--which would be pronounced 'Koo-shee' in French--is a way of saying 'Grandmother' for people who were bilingual in Dakota and French. It might even be a way of identifying 'Indian Grandma' as opposed to 'White Grandma'. Since her descendants were all mixed blood. Thanks so much for this. Now this just leaves me wondering about her real name--I have seen it written Tranamimirsavaii -- I think it appears this way in a baptismal record, it is also repeated on websites and I found a distant cousin who also knew it that way. But I can definitely believe that her name has been deformed. The priest who wrote it down at her baptism maybe didn't speak the language and just wrote down how it sounded to him, which might not be very much like what it really was. After all her husband's name, Monjeau, gets spelled all kinds of ways in censuses and other records (Moizo, Mizio, Maizo, Mosier, Mosher, Mogeau...) Thanks to others who have posted suggestions about the family tree. Everything I look at keeps repeating that she is the daughter of one of the Wabashas. But I don't know how they know that. What is the evidence? Which Wabasha? Well maybe if I keep searching and asking, I will find out some day. Thanks again to everyone.

Have you looked at the Wabashaw Family Tree that Jimmy has posted ? Is she on that tree? I have seen various family trees and none of them give much information about Nanna Coussi. Most say she is the daughter of Chief Wabasha but often don't say which Wabasha. Some say Wabasha I which I think is impossible from the dates but Wabasha II would be possible. She did live in Wabasha's village and my great-great grandmother Sophia Monjeau (married name Huot) was born and grew up there with Wabasha's people, but then she married a white man. Dale Ebersol's site has one family tree that gives a slightly different line but I have emailed that person and she doesn't know anything about Nanna Coussi's ancestry. I have a feeling many of the family trees posted are just quoting each other. I think her relationship to "Indian John" whose picture was posted here a while back (not by me) is supposed to be that he married her sister's daughter. But there seem to be more than one John Hoffman in the family at that time so that gets very confusing too. I am really grateful to everyone who has tried to help me with this and everyone who has helped me in learning about my Mdewakanton ancestors. Every bit of information is precious.

Hello:
What a treat to see the Monjeau surname site!
My maiden name was Monjeau - born in St. Paul - and am a descendant of Joseph Monjeau & Nana Cousi - their son Antoine & wife Permillia Akers Monjeau.
From our family history, Nana Cousi was a daughter of Wabasha II. Her sisters were "Indian Lucy" and "Indian Jennie" - I do have their Dakota names -- and will add that to another email at a later date.
Nana Cousi died in March of 1863 after maple sugaring. She caught a cold which developed into pneumonia. Joseph and Nana Cousi had property in Ravenna Township - just south of Hastings and just north of Prairie Island. She was buried just south of their home at the 1859 Elliot Hill Cemetery (hidden up a step hill on a hill covered with trees and difficult to find - the first time). Antoine is buried there, Harriet Monjeau Mavis (a sister), and youngest brother Alexander. My father knew Alexander - my father was just 5-6 years old but remembered seeing him. Another brother, Jean-Baptiste Monjeau died in 1842 (he was just little) and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul. Another sister, Teresa Potvin (& her family) is buried at Trimbelle, Wis ( about 20 minutes east towards Ellsworth - past Prescott, Wis) as is Eduard (Edward) - who had been a soldier in the frontier war & Civil War - was very ill and was allowed to come home to die. He died at another sister's home - Sophia Monjeau Huot's home (I saw a posting from her g-g gran-daughter!) and is buried next to his sister Theresa & family.
Nana Cousi's first husband was Francois LaBathe. Their two children were Michel (Michael) and Joseph. A friend/cousin, and descendant of Joseph LaBathe is a neighbor. Francois LaBathe was one of the first people killed on the first day of the 1862 Dakota Conflict - he was killed at the Lower Agency.
Joseph Monjeau died in Granite Falls on January 10th, 1870 or 1875.
I look forward to meeting more family on-line - and am constantly amazed at the new friends & family that we can meet - and more family history we can learn about.
Kindest regards to all and a blessed day to you.

Hi AtGreyCloud, I am also a descended from Joseph and Nanna Monjeau. Thier daughter Harriet (Monjeau) and Simon Mavis are my 2x's Greatgrand parents and their daughter Mary (Mavis) and Mose McCoy were my grandma's parents. Lavina (McCoy) Huysentruit, my mom was Gladys (Lucy) Huysentruit/Garrett. I have been looking for five years for Nanna's grave. I found Harriet two years ago and have been working on thier grave ever since. It was over run with weeds and their standing stone is laying down. I have just about gotten rid of the weeds and have planted some flowers and a drawf lilac bush this year. We haven't figured out how we are going to get their standing pillar back where it belongs, but we will. Can you tell me about where Nanna is buried ? My husband and I go there at least once a week and I have looked every where I thought. Do you by any chance have any photo's of them? I have pictures of Lucy and John, Jennie and her John and their daughter Julie's wedding picture plus McCoy and Mavis Photo's also. Joseph died in 1875. I cannot believe that someone actully knows where Nanna is buried. Now if I can just find out where Louis and Angelique Brunell, my other 3x's greatgrandparents are buried, I will know where all of them are . I live in Cottage Grove and my email is preeves6@comcast.net and I'm so glad you found this site, isn't it wonderful? I still haven't figured out how to put any photo's or papers I have on this site, I will probably just have to email them to Jimmy. Thank you Patty

Hello Cousin AtGreyCloud! I am so delighted to 'meet' you and to hear a little more family history. I would love so much to see a picture of Nana Coussi's grave. I live too far away to visit it. Do you know anything else about her? Her full name? Is 'Coussi' an odd spelling of 'Kunsi' as has been suggested on this site? Any other stories about her at all? Any family pictures? I would be grateful for ANYTHING.
I would be curious to know how you know about Nana, her death, her ancestry and family. Did you learn this by doing research, or were you told this by your family?
Yes I'm descended from Sophia Monjeau Huot. She ended up out in Oregon with her daughter's family. I assume she's buried there but I've never been able to find where. I do know the story about how Edward Monjeau died at Sophia's house in Trimbelle Wisconsin. If you have ever heard any stories about Sophia or her husband John or their children Frank (my g-grandfather), Ellen, Mary, or John Jr, I would be eternally grateful to hear them, no matter what they are. All the family history was basically lost to us and I am trying to recover what I can. In any case great to hear from you.

You mention most of Nanna and Joseph Monjeau's children, but you don't mention Mary or Louis. Any idea what became of them? I think Mary married another McCoy (maybe not related to the one that Mary Mavis, Harriet's daughter, married) but I've never been able to find any trace of Louis after about 1865. Maybe he died?? My great-uncle was named Louis and I always figured he might have been named after Louis Monjeau, who was HIS great-uncle. Anyway I was really happy that your father remembered Alexander--it's exciting to 'meet' someone who could trace a living memory back to my g-g-grandmother's brother. As I said I would so much love any stories at all about these people, even really minor stuff would be very welcome. I've studied the Census returns and sent for a few things like land patent documents and the military pension file on Edward Monjeau (where your ancestor Permilia Akers Monjeau plays a role) but I would love to hear any memories or anecdotes or even just a few facts.

sh225: If you knowthe date of her death, then you may be ableto find an obituary in the local newspaper, or trythe Indian newspaper Oyate Oiaye(sp.) here isa website you can try: www.intermet.net it is a search Engine. if you also know the place of death, you can try finding the county where she died at www.rootsweb,com at the cities/Counties link. type in the the city and it will bringup every county in USa that has a city with tht name. then just click on the right county and it will bring up that county's genweb. See if they have Cemetery Listings, and check them out.

Thanks very much Patty. I knew when Louis was born but not when he died. My g-grandfather must have decided to name his son after his deceased uncle. It makes sense. sh225, Louis Monjeau Moshier was born Nov. 2, 1841 in Prescott, Priece County Wisc. died in 1874. Louis never married.
