buffalogal, There were two Sam Wells'. Wasa was our great-grandfather, married to Ida Chapman, daughter of Bushman Chapman, Tacankuwaste, and Mary, Makatokcawin. They had two children: Sophia Wells Weston and Stephen Wells. swm

I think Wasa is the Sam Wells we are related to also! Do you know anything about HIS parents? Is his mother Anna Wells/Tatekayakewin? What about siblings? We think he has a brother, Henry Wambdisun, and a sister, Mary Iciyapewin Trudell.

buffalogal, This is what we have for our Sam Wells' parents, father Cegaapapi, dates of birth and death unknown; his mother was Taunhdakawin or Ellen (B 1813, DOD 1886). Sam Wells was born about 1850. Both Sam and Ida are buried in the Indian cemetery at Flandreau.
The Sam Wells on the 86 and 89 census has his mother listed as Anna, that must be who you are looking for? It also lists a brother David. We are still researching our family tree, including finding out more on our great-grandfather, like any brothers or sisters.
Do you have more information on Henry and Mary? Thank you and hope this helps! swm

the Baptismal record for anna webster lists her parents as Philip Webster and Mary Webster. Philip's probate lists his first wife as tiakiskatowin, and that anna was their surviving daughter. tiakiskatowin's mother was listed on the 1902 Santee Reg. of Ind. Fam. as Ashdohewin. Ashdohewin was noted to have had several children, including Josephine Webster( ref. her Probate), Susan W. Bahr, with other men but not as husband and wife. Anna's half sibs are these two women, and Lulu Primeau(d/o Ashdohewin and John Premeau).

We see that Philip Webster was buried in Santee. His DOB is 1846. See below. www.rootsweb.com/~neknox/cemeteries/catholic.htmHe would be too young to be the father or husband of our Anna Wells. The DOB for our Anna Wells is 2/28/1803. Anna's son Henry Wabmdisun (Eagle Feather or Eagle Wing) DOB: 1827 and Mary Iciyapewin Trudell DOB: approx. 1825. Thanks for any suggestions/advice! buffalogal

what intrigues me is what your reference is for alleging that Sam Wells,Henry Wambdisun and Mary Iciyapewin were siblings. Henry Wambdisun and Mary Iciyapewin were brother and sister. And so far none has shown me anything written or a reference that says Sam Wells wasrelated to them. At Ancestry.com there are several Anna Wells.theother problemis we don't know her Indian name or the English transaltion of it weither, which would help in a search.

We have a handwritten family tree showing Mary Iciyapewin Trudell, Henry Wambdisun (Eagle Wing) and Sam Wells as siblings.
We have seen a probate with Henry Wambdisun's parents listed as: Tatekayakewin (Mother) and Wamndisun Ianyake (Father).
Thanks for any help or suggestions you can provide!

buffalogal and other searchers: Anna Wells died in 1890/1893 in Minnesota at the age of 97, and is buried there, according to my informant at Nat. Fam. Res. center. Unfortunately, Mary Iciyapewin's probate is nowhere to be found, according to BIA in Winnebago. So we have no way of confirming your references re. her relationship to Sam but, I understand that Mr. Brill the retired genealogist did a tree of the Trudells, and maybe he could help you.I am sorry I don't know how to contact him, but Edith Casaday at Nat. Fam. Res. Ctr.(phone 712-252-5902) a good reputable genealogist always provides references to his work.
