I agree Jackie, but it doesn't mention Alice in that paper does it? Maybe a good place would be the court/land records in Moody County to see where she is and if there is any mention of her or Francis....But then again maybe they already have all this information.

Would Mahpiyawakanzi be her Dakota name? The name would translate to Sacred Yellow Cloud. Or it could be Mahpiyawanzi translating to One Cloud. Any how I don't know anything about her....sorry. wazi

Please pardon a white guy from entering the conversation. My great great grandmother (Elizabeth Ann Thompson was her maiden name) had a grandson Elmo Eddy who married Edna Arrow, daughter of Thomas Arrow who was son of Francis Arrow (Wahinkpe) and Alice (Ohiyewin). I take a rather broad viewpoint as to what constitutes family, rather than a narrow viewpoint, so I have been studying the Arrow family a bit. Francis also had a brother, Stephen (Huntkamaza), and they were caught up in the 1862 war. There was a query in this forum about where some of the people were from. There is a census from Ft. Snelling for 1862 that lists Wahinkpe and Huntkamaza as members of Taopi's band. As near as I can determine, Taopi's village was on the south side of the Minnesota River between Ft. Ridgely and the Lower Agency (Morton). Taopi tried to keep his warriors out of the fighting. Huntkamaza was one of the negotiators of the cessation of hostilities at Wood Lake. Hope this information helps somebody. I would love to hear from any descendents of Francis and Thomas Arrow and the Eddy's.

More stuff: Duncan Graham (RIN 1117/M338) Duncan, born about 1772 in the Highlands of Scotland and descended from a good family, described by people who knew him as a small sized man, quite unassuming, and upright in his intercourse with his fellow men and highly respected He came to British North America/York Factory on Hudson’s Bay in the early part of the 1790’s and then to the areas to be later called Minnesota as early as 1802 and then to Wabasha, Minnesota about 1834. He became Hohayteedah or Hoarse Voice to the Dakota. He married a half-breed Dakota woman, Hazahotawin (R1287) by whom he had five children; 1. Jane (R1132) Born abt. 1804 2. Elizabeth Marie (R1133) Born about 1805 3. Nancy Lucy (R1130) Born about 1807/1808, 4. Sarah Marie (R1116) Born about 1811, 5. Alexander (R1131) Born about 1822 Jane Graham (R1132) Was born about 1804. She married James “Bully” Wells and had a family. Jane died in 1881 at Fort Snelling. Elizabeth Marie (Mary) Graham (R1131) was born about 1805. She wed Alexander Faribault (R1228). Alexander was the son of Jean Baptiste Faribault, a pioneer fur trader. His father taught the Indians agriculture, and is reported to have been the first white settler to cultivate soil in the State of Minnesota. Alexander began trading with the Indians up and down the Cannon in about 1826. In 1834 he established a permanent trading site, now known as the City of Faribault. Alexander, his Father, and his brothers Oliver and David were interpreters during the Indian treaty negotiations. Nancy Lucy Graham (R1130) was born about 1807/1808. She married Joseph Buisson, Sr., an Indian trader and voyager. They married in 1832 or 1833 and established a trading post at Wabasha. Nancy Lucy Graham and Joseph Buisson had seven children: Henry, Joseph Jr., Antoine, Cyprian, Mary Louise, Mary Jane (Jennie) and Harriet. Henry, Joseph and Cyprian became river pilots. Antoine died young. Harriet married Peter Henry LaRiviere I and settled in Wabasha. Mary L. Buisson Mc Laughlin discusses her grandfather, "Captain Duncan Graham," in her (1913) book "Myths & Legends of the Sioux." Mary states that he was "a Scotchman by birth, who had seen service in the British Army, (and he) was one of a party of Scotch Highlanders who in 1811 arrived in the British Northwest by way of York Factory, Hudson Bay, to found what is now known as the Selkirk Colony, near Lake Winnipeg, now within the province of Manitoba, Canada. Soon after his arrival at Lake Winnipeg he proceeded up the Red River of the North and the western fork thereof to its source, and thence down the MN River to Mendota, where he located." Mary seems to be implicitly referring to Graham settling down with his wife, who lived in the Mendota MN area. Sarah Marie Graham (R1116) was born about 1811. She married Oliver Cratte (R1109), who was one of the original proprietors of the town of Wabasha. She died about 1840. Alexander Graham (R1131) was born in about 1822. He became an Indian Trader and married a Sioux woman named Blossom (R1817). Alex and Blossom had at least two sons, Alexander, Jr.(R1259) and Andrew. They made their home in Wabasha. Alexander Graham (R1131) was taken captive in the Minnesota Indian War of 1862. From the Book "Through Dakota Eyes", Nancy McClure Faribault gives the following account: "Someone raised the cry that the Indians had started killing half-breeds. I caught up my child and ran. I saw my husband, David Faribault with Alex Graham, running into Little Crow's corn field, and I saw him no more that night." She later goes on the say that she found her husband the next day and that no one was killed that night except for an Indian who was struck by lightening. Depending upon the source was also known as Brown Eyes or Istagi or Susan Brown Eyes or Susan Pennishon. Baptismal Records by Bishop Loras show two Graham children in 1839 – Alexander age 18 and Sara Marie age 28
