I am looking for information on my grandfather Wahinkpe's wife on the 1870 Moody County census she is Agnes and on the 1880 Brookings census she is Alice and the same kids are listed on both. I am wondering if you guys could help me figure this out.
In River Bend Curch Records Alice "Ohiyewin" Arrow is found there but not her husband. Then.........
In some other River Bend Records written by Rev. Williamson date unkown there was a wahinkpe and two other woman and
different children there. Yet...........they mentnion Wahinkpe and Ohiyewin's marriage as being solemnized or something. Help!!

Yes, I found Alice Ohiyewin but no date of birth it was a registration rather than a baptismal she was not on thier records. Any other ideas?

Another link I am interested in is the name Iron Heart or Chantemaza was my ggggrandfather on my maternal side. Heard of him?? Any starting infor would help. Thanks.

Ohiyewin means to be a winner. win of course means woman and Ohiye means winner. SO i assume it means a woman who is a winner.

I believe Charles Eastman was Ohiye. Does Alice and Agnes have the same Dakota name?

So there must be more to Charles Eastmans name like wicasa (man) or brave or something..... As for Alice, yes accordng to records her name is Ohiyewin. As for Agnes, I think that she and Alice are the same person. Just a mistake made on the 1870 fed census. Because on the 1870 census she has the same children that Alice has on the 1880 census and them Alice has them on the 1880- 1895 Flandreau census. So In my opinion it was an error on the part of the census taker. Misheard her maybe?  ?? |

i would agree with you bigwahinke re. the possibility of an error on the part of the Census Taker. And then too, some of them went by different names at different times.

Still trying to figure out Alice aka Ohiyewin aka agnes aka anna or annie and her background.
There is a news article stating her as anna being married to francis arrow. Its gettigneven more confusing. I will have to get the dates on that. My brother has that jnfo.
