I have a John Hoffman whose parents were Nomahdi and Tiyopa both dead.
this John Hoffman married Ellen iteihdawin in 1869 at Santee.

The John Hoffman listed on the 1889 census is married to a Jenny Hoffman. They had Emma Judson and Julia LaFramboise for children. This is a different John Hoffman then the one Hermin listed. You will need to find some additonal information to determine which one you are looking for.

The John Hoffman who was the son of Nomahdi and Tiyopa, his Indian name was Catanna, in 1885 he was 32 with wife Ellen and daughter Lucy.
The John Hoffman in Minnesota in 1885 his Indian name is Mahpiya akicita and he is 62 with his wife Jannette, and daughters Emma, Nancy, Julia and grandson Peter Judson. Peter is the son of Julia.
If you have an Indian name that would be very helpful.
