Not too much here on these Otherdays, lets get a rundown. they are on the 1886 list but not much lnfo posted that I could find. There was the John Otherday, a Wahpeton Chief born 1801 MN and died 1871 in Roberts County SD. Could James and Jacob be related to him? Please post any help for ancestors to see. thanks, m

The Otherday's stayed in Minnesota. They were agains the war. I think John is the father of James and Jacob. Jacob Otherday is one of my ancestors, but I haven't much time to search for him, especially since the museums are closed until May....

Narrative 5 John Other Day's Interview
John Other Day or Ampatutokacha was called Good Sounding Voice as a young man. he was born in about 1819 near Swan Lake (in present-day Nicollet County). As the son of Zitkaduta or Red Bird and nephew of Big Curley Head, leader of a Wahpeton band at Lac qui Parle, he was well connected. While still a young man, he was a successful warrior, but in 1856 he joined the Hazelwood Republic, an association of farmer Indians who adopted some white customs. In 1857 he aided in the rescue of Abbie Gardner, who had been taken captive at Spirit Lake, Iowa, and the following year he joined the treaty delegation that visited Washington, DC. On his return he was accompained by a white woman whom he later married.
When the war broke out, Otherday was the leader of a small band of Wahpeton farmers who lived near the Yellow Medicine Agency. He helped to organize a party of sixty-two whites and led them to safety. The refugees' arrival in St. Paul caused a great stir that was covered by the newspapers. Using missionary Gideon Pond as an interpreter, Otherday recounted his story of the flight for publication in a St. Paul newspaper. He then joined Sibley's army as a scout. For his services Otherday received twenty-five hundred dollars from the United States Congress, which he used to purchase a farm near Henderson. But he failed to make a living at farming and soon sold the property. By 1869, Otherday had moved to the Sisseton Reservation where he contracted tuberculosis. He died at the Fort Wadsworth military hospital on October 19, 1869.
