Your name: | Thunder | Name(s) to be searched: | Clay Walker | State and towns: | Dakota Territory | Baptismal search: | Yes | Email is optional: | | Extra comments: | In the 1886 Lower Brule Census, she was 50 years old and her name showed as Shalmani Clay Walker, wife of Little Elk. On a 1910 census it showed her name as (Nancy) Clay Walker. She was at that time 70 years old and living in Lower Brule. We are searching for who her parents are. Some records show that she was a Yankton Sioux. |

Hey Thunder Nancy Claywalker was my G-G-Grandmother, she was a Yanktonian Sioux and niece to Chief Bone Necklace, her son "Louis V. DeWitt" DOB- 1855" from her first marriage to "Joseph Veaux" a French Canadian fur traper, was my mothers Grandpa. They were married at Chauteau trading post and helped to build old Ft.Pierre where they lived until Joe's death around 1864, It is said that she moved into the Brule area, I know that Louis had a ranch at Ft. George, he called it Evergreen Ranch. Well thats about all I have on Nancy, let me know if you have any other questions. Oh ya! I do have a family pic. of Her and Joseph. Do you live in Bruley? Hi cuz Wapate Do I write like a twin ? Well I told mom (and Auntie to you) about the picture you have and she is very curious and excited as we have been doing our genealogy for the family on all sides since 1999 one of our aunt's is a member of a genealogy group. Can you tell me who you are? OR give a first name-hint hint.

Wapate;
Hi, I sure would appreciate a copy of the pic, that you have. Also any other papers concerning this family of ours. I would also share any papers or pics I might have that you do not have! All Clay Walkers descendents should have a meeting and bring all docs and knowledge about the family, would that not be GREAT!! To Meet each other and to share!
Clay Walker and Jos are my mother'sGGrandparents.
This is WONDERFUL!! To start meeting lost relatives with common ancestors.
I,am coming to LB today, by chance do you live in the area??

The following is from SD Historical Collections 1946
biographical information on Oscar Howe
Oscar Howe is a full blood Sioux, the son of George T Howe and Ella Not Afraid of Bear. he was born on May 13, 1916, on the Crow Creek Agency in South Dakota. On his father's side are Dont Know How, his grandfather, and Bone Necklace, his great grandfather, a Yanktaise chief, who made a memorable speech before the Northwestern Indian Commission in June 1886. This speech is reported in Volume IX of the Historical Collections at page 466. On his mother's side was Not Afraid of Bear, his grandfather and White Bear, his great grandfather, who distinguished himself at the time of the Santee uprising in 1862 and received a plaque from the Government for his services to the whites at that time. ....
What I am wondering about is the plaque. I have never heard of such a thing being awarded, has anyone else?
