dmburley, I have an "Oyateduta" in my tree Johnson (John) Redtribe/Redbird) born @ 1848. Was on the list of Scouts He was married to an Isabella. I don't know for sure what her maiden name was but I think her parents were Centanwinna and Cetankinye. Sure would like to see what you have. I don't have any family info on my Oyateduta previous to his marriage to Isabella. He was on the Santee Sioux Scouts 1873 #2 He and Isabellas children went by Johnson. Robert Johnson, their son married Lavinia Trudell, daughter of Peter and LizzieTrudell (nee ??) They had a daughter named Elvina(Alvina) who married Oscar Goodteacher and their son was my father Joseph Johnson Goodteacher. I hope this helps a little. Let me know if we are talking about the same Oyateduta. marnie

Marnie,
Came back from MN Arch Diocese last week and found more information in regards to the Oyateduta in my family. This is a woman and she went by many names but on her marriage cert. her first name is spelt Weate?? This is a french spelling so I am not quite sure how it would sound in french... She married a Louis Laramie... Not the same person but it does seem kind of strange that they share simular names though... Thanks for the inquiry. D!

John Redtribe married Isabella Redbird aka Tatiyonake, aka Johnson aka Hopkins. Lavinia later married a Black, according to the records I have. She was born 1885.

I think Oyate means tribe or nation or people. Dan refers to man or the masculine form. of the word. Re. Johnson Redbird or Redtribe, that is how it was listed in the 1884 Census, and his spouse was listed as Isabella Redbird aka Tationaka. she was married also to Thomas Walker, and James Hopkins.Ref. 1902,1884, and 1887 Santee Censuses.

It means people, or can mean nation.
