i was at the state archives in pierre yesterday and found this: no mention of POOR BEAR'S obit in the Iapi Oaye (Poor Bear died oct.11,1897, on crow creek), but there was an obit for WIZUN, LOUIS COURSOL who died on crow creek oct. 6, 1897. Poor Bear's daughter HANNAH LOVEJOY and her husband OWEN inquired as to the Louis Coursol allotment and said it could be listed under the name Wizun. i looked back and ahead in the paper and could find nothing on Poor Bear and wondered what the connection between him and Louis Coursol was and that the deaths were in the same place and almost the same time, could they be the same person? also i found that CETANWINNA , along with her grand children, DINAH PHILBRICK, JOHN PHILBRICK, FREDDIE PHILBRICK NANCY PHILBRICK, EMMA PHILBRICK, and JOSEPH PHILBRICK were all alloted land in nebraska. this is from a 1863 record per the lady at the archives.

P.S. all: i don't know what they meant by that 1863 date ...it can't be the date of that record, it's too early. i have emailed them to find out the correct date on that document.

Deerclan: It gets even wierder. According to his probate papers, Wizun aka Poor Bear aka Louis Coursol died 11 October, 1897. During his lifetime, he had 3 spouses: Grey Hawk Woman aka Cetanhotewin, Hapan, and Unknown Walker.
Children with #1: rebecca(now Philbrick) and Clinton Philbrick, and Several that died young. with #2:Thomas, William, and Hannah Lovejoy with #3: Isabella Walker My gut hunch and what I see in my index tell me that this Isabella's maiden name may very well have been Hopkins.
The other interesting thing about this name is that there are several Poor Bears on the Rosebud Reservation in S. Dakota.

I was given a quick lesson in Dakota. The Dakota put HU (Who) in the names usually after the first workd and the Lakota put HO (Hoe) after the first word. I think I have it right. I have been going back on my names because I fear I may have missed something. If someone can explain it better than I can or correct me if I'm wrong, I would appreciate it!
