Hello Linda: Could i ask in what reference you found it stated Mary Jane Wakute as an aunt of Ellen Turpin? I remember the Turpin name from early in my search. do you know how M J Wakute became the aunt-- thru a brother or sister or by marriage? We are also interested in finding out all we can about M J W. Thanks for anything you can give me.
Mary J Wakute was a sister or 1/2 sister to James - Oyemaza - RedWing Mary Jane Wakute married Thomas Robinson- had 3 daughters: Mary Louise married Samuel Bluestone Sarah married a DeMers and then a Mackey -and Celeste--i have nothing on her Mary Jane Robinson is listed in descendents of Scouts and Soldiers, and also listed with her daughter in St. Paul in 1904- I don't think she stayed with T..Robinson very long because in his information he had a 2nd wife named Mary. I would be interested to know what became of Mary Jane Wakute after she left ( or whatever) T. Robinson..She would have been 85 when she was with her daughter in St, Paul hope this helps a little----kit

Kit, On the list of they are using "1886" it has Ellen Turpin and then under her name is Mary (Aunt to Ellen). Then if you look at the next census they are using in Mendota Camp their is Ellen Turpin, Hellen ( adopted daughter of Ellen) then below that again is Mary and this time it has her middle and last name. That is where I found the information at. I come from the Turpin family so I was wondering about this name also. Thanks Linda

Linda: I took a look at the 1886 census and you are right about ellen turpin and mary- being the aunt at age 70. If you go back 3 names-you will see Mary Jane Wakute or Wigiwin- age 62- listed as living with Samuel Blackstone, her son in law. I think we are looking at 2 different mary's here. we know mary jane wakute and wigiwin are one and the same. On the 1889 census- in my understanding - it lists ellen turpin , as head of household, living with adopted daughter hellen. #5- mary jane wakute is 70 years old- and looks to me like she is living with julia otherday, and eunice wilson..... i am not saying you are wrong- i am just saying what my understanding of this is. somebody HELP linda and i here, please. thank you - kit

I have a note that states that Mary aunt of Ellen Turpin could be Marie Angelique Makwa. I know that Ellens father was Tomaha and mother was Winona. I have heard he was a cheif in the Redwing tribe or of a Menominee tribe.
I think if you look at some of the other census records you will see the Mary listed but instead of listed as an aunt she is listed as Ellen's mother.
Ellen and Jospeh Coursolle Sr had a son named Joseph. Ellen's Indian name is Apan.

I believe only by marriage. Nancy (Wakute) Wapaha, was the wife of Samuel d. Hinman, then she married thomas Wakute. Mary jane Wakute aka Wagiwin was the daughter of Wakute and she married Thomas Robinson.
