I had learned from so people who work with historic preservation that there had been thefts of some of the reservation headstones. I understand that those with the dakota language written on them have some wealth in some market. Has anyone else ever heard such? I did speak with an elder who confirmed the story but without details. It is so nice for people to photo document the cemetarys and would be nice to have a project organized to gather that information together. I know of someone right now that is doing incredible work in this very area. Myself I have found that in early spring or in the late fall is the best time as foliage is gone not as pretty but easier access to the headstones that are covered in bushes. It was a "trend", for lack of a better word, in the first part of the 1900's to plant the lilac bushes that seem to wreck so much havoc in our cemetarys. My grandfather had us cut much down and back as possible but they are hard to control. Good to know these things that he cared about now that he is no longer here.
