If you Google 1885 Census of Bottineau County, there will be a long list of opportunities for you to find the original census in its entirety. It was mentioned that a full listing wcould be found at NDSU(North Dakota State University). Please let us know if you need more help. Sunshine

In Canada, we can locate the originals of census records for free at Library and Archives Canada online. They are also available at Census of Canada Indexing Project online. There is no similar system in the US? If not, I'm happy to pay if I have to. Thanks for the lead.

There are a number of ways to access this information. First of all, all of the 1885 census' were sent to our National Archives, "except" the Dakota Territory.
This can be found at either the South Dakota State Archives: Virginia.Hanson2@state.sd.us or the
North Dakota State Archives: history.nd.gov/archives/ or histsoc@nd.gov
It depends upon what part of the territory that you are looking for information on.
You can also access them at ndsu.library.archives@ndsu.edu for a $5.00 fee per family
The last oaccess that I found was through Ancestry.com You can google Census Records Online@Ancestry.com. Some records are free, some require a small payment.
Hope that this helps you! Sunshine

PS. In 1905, the North Dakota Legislative assembly made it a law that the newspaper had to send a copy of all of their newspaper to the Historical Society. So, if the area that you are looking for in the current day state of North Dakota, there should be a wealth of information to be had. Sunshine
