Dawn, Have you seen any other spellings of this name? The dictionaray does not have any translations for this spelling. Could the Wapha mean Wapaha? Do you have any known connections to the Wabasha or Wapaha tribe?

Dawnday: I amthinking that the spelling should be Wapahaduta. there is a Wapahaduta that was with the Redwing band @!1849-50 at Redwing Mission.

HERMAN1,
THE SPELLING IS WAPHADUTA, THAT SEEMS AWFULLY CLOSE TO YOUR SPELLING. MY CONNECTIONS ACTUAL NAME IS: WILLIAM DAY (WAPHADUTA FATHER: JAMES C. DAY FROM SISSITON 1891 TIME ZONE. THIS IS A POSSIBLE RELATIVE CONNECTION.
THANKS AGAIN,
DAWNDAY:)

Wapa' ha,
n. = A headdress of feathers. Nupin Tatanka - unpi.
n. The shaft or pole on which are tied feathers of various colors and used in the Dakota dances ; a standard, banner, flag.
Duta = Red
Lakota - English Dictionary, Buechel, Eugene, S.J., Red Cloud Indian School, Inc., Pine Ridge, South Dakota 57770, 1970 (p. 544) (p. 680)
My Guess: "RED Feathers."

( i made some additions and corrections.Hermin1. I am so frustrated at not being ble to see clearly. Please excuse my blunders).Dawnday: James C. Day was the son of William Wapahaduta, William's mother was Nancy Mahpiyaskanskanwin.. Her father was yajopi and her mother was Mahpiyaiciyoptewin( Correction: tunkan iciyoptewin).. Yajopi's tree is on Mike denney's website,I think: mdenney.proboards55.com/index.cgi?look in the section titled To Get Help On a Person. I have posted a number of family Treehs there. You got your names and connections mixed up ,I believe. Waphaduta translates to Scarlet leaf and I don't think that this is one of the chief Wapahashaws. anyway Waphaduta had a daughter named Takanheca who was the first spouse of Joseph Godfrey,SR.( see Joseph Godfrey,Sr. testimony in through dakota Eyes).this Waphaduta may have had other children, and I believe he had more than one wife.

As for RuFus Day and his kin, contact ed50 of Oyate . I think she can help you with your Day connections.
