I thought I might let the board know that I have been working on quite a project these past months and have finally made some progress. I will now be working with the SWO Tribal Historic Preservation Office and will be able to focus on the type of concerns regarding history that many of us share here on this board. We are very blessed on this reservation that our Tribal Chairman is a known historian and very active in preserving our history. It shows in the growth of such organizations as out TribalHistoric Preservation Office and our Archives. I am doubly pleased that the THPO and Archive offices work together in their history efforts. Of course our archealogists and officers work on the section 106 issues with such things as the Transcanada Pipeline andhow it will impact our homelands and sacred sites as well as the basic of preserving our history. My immediate tasks will involve our cemetaries. Iwill be making efforts to collect all information on burial sites and names of ancestors buried there. There are some oral histories that will tell of such and often there are no markers to verify them. If any family knows of any such history or would like to share anything regarding theirs, please feel free to contact me at Tamara_stjohn@yahoo.com. I intend to continue working with the board as this has become a very valuable tool in dakota research thanks to its founders and those that continue to keep it alive and progressing.
thank you tamara

Oh, Praise the Lord! I have been trying to do the cemeteries, but find it so difficult living 7 1/2 hours away! MountainHead is done as far as I can go. I have listed here, all of the markers which are readable, all the records at the courthouse in Britton for this cemetery (scant records), any info from families that they care to share, and burials from any death certificates I have in my possession. While this cannot be anywhere near complete, there are so many many unmarked graves here, I hope we can exchange info, and share anything new we might find. You can add to your records and I can add to Find A Grave. So, if anyone has kin buried here, and they are not listed on this site, please let us know. This may be the only way we can complete the rest of the burials. There are no records for this church/ cemetery in existance today. They were destroyed by fire and were never sent to PA. Tamara, please keep me/us informed of which cemeteries you are working on so we don't duplicate our efforts. I hope to get back up there next year! Thanks! www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GSmid=46951392&CRid=2239208&pt=Mountainhead-LaBelle%20Cemetery&

Thanks Tamara, doing this "work" makes my heart sing. I am going to go through the Iapi records and also add any burials for MountainHead from those. I think there will be a LOT of additional entries soon from that source.

Not that I am aware of. I have been speaking to the State Historical Society about what might be available but will no more in the course of this project. I am sure that many of our native ministers have been overloaded with requests for searches. Some I believe are lost or destroyed and some are in private hands. I see what I can find.

when I first started working onthe board, i happened to call the Priest at the St. Joseph's church , I think near crow Creek or sisseton, and he said that some Catholic church Records were transfered to Browns Valley Catholic church.
