to the Greeks, despoiling a grave site is an anthema. In Greece many of the Cemeteries are surrounded by a grove of Cypress trees. I think there is some ancient tradition or superstition connected with this. There is also a superstition or tradition that if you have wronged someone during your life, you must get their forgiveness before you die or you'll go to hell. We believe the departed soul travels the earthfor forty days after death. Well, my father had died just before thanksgiving in 1972. I had come home from Graduate school for Christmas break. My first night home, I went to sleep on the couch, and while I was dozing off, Ifelt a kiss on my right cheek.I woke up looked around, noone was there. The next morning I told my mom thanks for the kiss, and she said she didn't kiss me. I got spooked.she just shrugged, andsaid,"Well, it must have been your dad." When we were young he wouldget up during the night, to stoke the fire inthe furnace, and would check on all his brood,to make sure we were all in bed, and Iknow he often would kiss us on the cheek.
