Can someone (besides Allie!) help me to find more info on the Dakota that fled to the North West and made their home on Vancouver Island? I could just kick myself for not knowing this when I lived an hours ferry ride from Vancouver Island!! Thanks Allie for the info you allready gave me! The story goes that one of the Dakota swam to the Island and found it to be a good place to live. Knowing those waters I kind of doubt he swam the Strait Of Juan De Fuca, most likely canoe or whaling boat from one of the WA tribes, maybe Makah or Sklalam, those are the only tribes that would have been on the WA Penninsulal at the time. Very curious. I think I will email the Vancouver Historical Society. I have been to the Native Museum there but did not see mention of anything on the Sioux there. ? Please pardon my spelling. I am typing as fast as I can before my time is up here at the Watertown Library. AH!! Times Up. Thanks, Sara

i have read in several references that someof the mdewakantons fled to the far west., to Oregon or Washington. I would suggest that you see if you canfind someearly Censues of that area @1870 or so and see what names comeup. or type History of Vancouver Island in the browser andsee what comes up.

I tried looking for Sioux Indians in the 1901 and 1911 census of Canada, in British Columbia I could not find more than 3 or 4 Sioux Indians each year.

Hi Denny, Thanks, I did not see anything about Sioux, or Dakota. I know Vancouver Island has been the home to native tribes for 100's of years but that book does not seem to mention them. ? I will keep looking though. Thanks
