I am looking for baptism records for my geat grand parents Isabella (St. Clair) Black Smith and Stephan Black Smith. I have a copy of my Grand Fathers Gilbert Christian Black Smith with the place of baptism Our Most Merciful Savior on 12/31/1893 the witnesses Smith Robinson, Stephan Black Smith and Mary St. Clair. I read on one record my great grandmothers name was changed to Elizabeth at her baptism. She also had Isabella Moore / Johnson./ Black smith/ Bearshield on my mothers probate papers. The church is on the National Historic Sites list. According to the data I got a day or so ago, the churchis still in use as a church, and so is the Pilgrim church

Sioux Valley Genealogical Society in Sioux Falls should have some of these on microfilm. Also Center for Western Studies at Augustana is another place to check. A third spot would be to check the Iapi Oaye newspapers for the baptisms you seek. The baptisms were in the papers for all of the Sioux families. You can get these on microfilm through the Latter Day Saints, or go to Pierre, S.D., or you can go to USD in Vermillion, they have some of the original papers. Also The Center for Western Studies at Augustana supposedly has the entire set of Iapi Oaye Newspapers.

Where is the Center for Western Studies at Augustana located? I would sure like to see the Iapi Oaye Newspapers for baptisms. Are these the ones that are also at Wicanpi research? Thanks, Watash

I do not know if Augustana will share those records or not. You can call them at Center for Western Studies, 2201 S. Summit Ave., Box 727, Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD 57197 Phone: 605-274-4007 or 1-800-727-2844 (ext. 4007)

One of the patronsof Nat. Fam. Res. Center, has also been asking about the Congregational Church Records for Santee. I would try typing in Congregational Church Aarchives for Nebraska and see what you come up with. Also try Congregational Church Archives in your search engine.

jeremiah has also been listed as jerry, gerard, and pahinsasa. as for known children: there is a mary elizabeth with a paulina lapoint. She was baptised at St. Felix Church, in Minnesota in the 1870s. then there are marion, sarah, sophia, and lizzie baptized at flandreau in 1874. then we also have a william j., cora theresa, and david. theresa cora's, william j.s and david's baptisms are in the santee mission books. bit is a very confusing family tree. i descend from theresa cora campbell denn(e)y.

Hi, I called the Western Center for the baptismal records today they said they didn't have the staff to do the research, so they transferred all the Santee Baptismals to the law firm in MN. If I get any more information on them I will post it. Thanks, Linda

Jackie, Have you found the baptismals for Stephen Blacksmith and Isabella Blacksmith yet? I'm assuming that you have them now, as Dr. Buttes Records are out. I went to Dr. Buttes office and got a signed baptismal record last month from her office. Let me know if you still need them. SZ
