good to see you back sominex. No, I haven't run across those names.was this soldier a Union soldier? does your friend have anything about where the soldier came from(place of birth)? He should be listed in the civil War database. I will see what I can find.have you searched the LDs Archives there in Utah?

I checked the Soldiers and Sailors civil War Database and he is not listed. The reason is I don't have the information as to what state he enrolled in to complete the search in the database. the Iapi Oyae Index lists First Holy woman marrying Sam Feather at the Long Hollow church in 1885, and Sarah First Holy Woman was baptized at that church in 1885.is this your friend's gr. grandmother? That is all I was able to find on her. Nothing on her parents. is your friend sure her parents lived at Sisseton, and not at the Devils lake Reservation?

The name First Holy Woman is spelled wrong. Tokahe, the "T" must have been miss-read to an "L". There are no "L's" in the Dakota Dialect.

Thanks for your quick reply Herman!! Sorry for the long delay, I have a habit of neglecting to check back as to whether anybody replies to my questions! But I have the Oyate tab saved, so I can check more frequently now. I am waiting to hear back from my friend as to whether this might be his great great grandmother. Sominex

First Holy Woman is my great great grandmother. According to a book, "Red Shadows of the Blood Moon", written by my father's first cousin, John Contway, her name was changed to Mary Jane Ball when she was kidnapped/sold/traded to/by Bartholomew Ball. He joined the Union Army in 1863 out of Pennsylvania. They were married in the early 1860's at the Fort Peck Wolf Point outpost on their way to Fort Assiniboine. They homesteaded near Lodgepole, Montana. Their homestead was known as Ball's Canyon. The book has more information.
