HIAWATHA INDIAN INSANE ASYLUM GATHERING TO BE HELD SUNDAY, MAY 17TH, 2015 12 NOON AT THE HIAWATHA INDIAN INSANE ASYLUM CEMETERY LOCATED OFF THE EAST HIGHWAY 18 IN CANTON, S.D.
A spiritual ceremony of healing and remembrance will be held at the Hiawatha Insane Asylum Cemetery located in the Hiawatha Golf Course between the 4th and 5th holes in Canton, South Dakota on Sunday, May 17, 2015, at 12 noon, off of East Highway 18.
The asylum opened 12 years after the Wounded Knee Massacre in which the United States Government continued its campaign to stop all Indian spiritual activities in communities on reservations nationwide. For 32 years the Bureau of Indian Affairs operated and maintained the facility at Canton. The treatment of Indians sent there was deplorable.
Today there are 120 known bodies buried in the cemetery from 53 nations and tribes. A ribbon ceremony calling the names of those buried in prayer to the four winds as ribbons will be tied to the fence in the four directions and in the four colors asking the wind to carry our prayers home to the relatives of those buried there not to forget them.
• The Sacred Horse Society will be doing an honor ride to the cemetery.
• Joe Shields will be doing the Wiping the Tears Ceremony
• Rising Hail Drummers and Singers will be singing traditional songs
• The Yankton Sioux Veteran’s Guard will also attend to honor those buried
• A pot luck buffalo lunch will be served after the ceremony in the clubhouse
This year’s organizers are asking all traditional and spiritual people to attend the ceremony as well as the general public. Bring sage for smudging and token rocks to lie on the remembrance plaque as well as traditional food.
