Pilayamaye, Rene'e Dawn Day O'Conner, for directing me to this group.
I humbly seek any information regarding my grandparents both born in VA. I have few details to go on, they were both deceased before I had a chance to meet either of them. I have attached a picture of part of my father's birth certificate including all the information I started with. I have been able to find my grandmother's SS death index record under the record of Dessie Turner as well as a couple of census records out of NY but not much else. She was born around 1905 in VA and passed away in November of 1978 in NY.... the same month and year I was born. My grandfather, Luther Thomas, was born around 1900 in VA and from census records found in NY on Dessie Turner it leads one to believe he passed away before my father was 10.
The 10 years of somewhat limited (limited to what I can find for free) research I have done leads straight to the theory that my ancestors have been the victims of Walter Plecker. I have no surviving family that can tell me anything at all about my father's family and it wasn't until close to his death that he actually revealed my true heritage to me. He had been raised to deny who he was and simply blend in.
My father, Robert Turner, no middle name, was born in Hempstead, NY 12/22/1928 at the Almshouse hospital (now Bellevue hospital) in 1928. He told me he had a sister but I never met her nor did he tell me her name. Other than his birth certificate stating 2 live births I have never been able to find any more information out.
The generation gaps are great, sometimes they seem like too much to overcome but my ancestors are calling me to continue looking. My children deserve to have what was taken from me. Any information, any at all, would be very helpful.
Here is a link to a photo of my father holding me as an infant so you can see how the white status of my grandparents on the birth certificate is significant.... www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=620638761294402&set=pb.100000448502540.-2207520000.1373725843.&type=3&theater
Philamayayapi. If I can answer any questions that may help figure out this puzzle I will be more than happy to do so. I have to be honest though, other than what is included here a lot of what I have is simply theory based on history, records and lack there of. Again, philamayayapi.
