Hello everyone! I am new to the forum and would like to introduce myself. My name is Shari (Haynes) Aljumah. I grew up in Michigan but currently live 1/2 way around the world with my husband and two children. I joined this forum to do a little research and to educate myself. My family, on my mother's side, has always claimed to have Native blood but there is no evidence of this. They say a possible relation is from the Santee Sioux. I would like to try and find out if it is true. If not, well, I gained knowledge I never had before. I'm not sure what all to ask or list because I am new to researching my family history. So, here goes nothing. ;D All this information is from my mother's family. These are names that my Aunt has listed in her family history research before she passed away several years ago. (No one has kept up on researching.) Family names mentioned are Palmerton, Gibbs, Owen, Smith, Clay, Hallock and Clark. If anyone could give me any advice as to where to start I would be grateful for the help. Thank you so much and I look forward to participating and learning with everyone.

shari: welcome to our web site. did your relatives say on which sode of your tree the Sioux heritage is(mother or father?) Start with your parents, and list the vital data you have(birth and,if indicated, death dates, marriage date and where they were born and if indicated where they died. Then do the same with their parents, then your gr. grandparents, etc. Work backwards on both sides of your family as far back as you can.this information willhelp us to help you.

Thanks for posting. Sorry it took me so long to sign back in to say thanks. I'll get the information around that I have and will post it. I know the "claim" of Sioux heritage is on my mother's side of the family. I know very little about my father's side. Hopefully I can post again in a couple hours.

Hermin1: Thank you for your help. All this information is on my mother's side and the family history seems to be following the Owen side of the family. I will start with my mother- Yvonne (Palmerton) Haynes DOB Feb. 11, 1953. My grandmother- Esther Norine (Owen) Palmerton DOB June 2, 1928. Great-Grandparents: Harman Clarance Owen 1899-1967 Minnie (Gibbs) Owen Great-great Grandparents: Clarance James Owen 1868-1936 Olive (Burton) Owen G-G-G Grandparents: Henery Clay Owen 1845- June 5, 1913 Caroline D. Shales her parents were James and Maribell Shales. G-G-G-G Grandparents: Charles C. Owen 1808-1865 Elizabeth Clark
There is also mention of Asa Owen February 15, 1785-September 3, 1877. His first wife was Lucinda (Corwin) Owen They had 6 children. She passed away July 30, 1838. Asa then married Martha (Travis) Owen 1807-1894. They had 3 children together. I'm not sure how, or if, Asa is related to me.
My mother mentioned the name Elijah B. Clark but didn't finish telling me about him.
I will ask my mom to scan more papers for me.
Thank you for your help.

Shari: the info you posted is fine. But I need you to also tell me about where these people were born and where they died. Do you have any obituaries for any of these people? These provide valuable information alo. I will start searching, so please send me the plaes of birth and /or death if you have them.

Hermin1: Thank you for looking. I kind of thought the "claim" of Native blood in my family was just a rumor passed down. Again, thank you so much for your time.
