Hau all: Hey I am married to a Lakota Wiyan from CRST, her maiden name is Blue Coat. Yes I know there are many with this name, we lived there and our 4 kids are members. Well we heard lots of stories about the origin of the name. One is a warrior took a cavalry jacket of a dead soldier and wore it after battle.
Another is they were scouts for the US Army so were allowed to wear the Blue Coats. I tend to believe the first more. Anyone know the truth?

The dakota word for blue coat or blanket was being used way back when, and possibly before the Missionaries came to the Midwest. As i understand the old sioux custom, a child was given two names, one which designated the birth order, the second was a descriptive name. ergotasinatowin. It could also be, that the word to for blue may staand for the color of something that the sioux saw in their surroundings. does this make sense?

I was reading , that the mohawk did call the French Blue coat. so if one of them took his jacket. might be something to that.
