Where would I track down probate records for our family's great grandfather Henry Two Bear (Padanikuwapi) (DLS #695) who was born in Devil's Lake North Dakota? His mother was Oyehotewin (DLS#1022) and his father was Mathew Sinteskasna Two Bear (DLS #694?).

try the Spirit Lake Ind. Res..You need to write to them and show how you are related to the persons for whom you seek information. also you may find them at the NARA in Wash. DC. contact maryfrancis.ronan@nara.gov she will need his english Name and Indian Name, when he died and his/her tribal affiliation note. Devils Lake Indian Tribe is now the Spirit lake Indian Tribe.

Thanks! I am familiar with Canada's government record search processes but not with American so I appreciate the help. I am also working on a Cree band/family that fled to Montana during the 1885 Rebellion in Saskatchewan Canada. I imagine I'll have to become familiar with Montana state record keeping as well.

I often go and search through Library and Archives Canada website, If your ancestor was Metis, it is possible she was listed in the Metis Scrip Records. You can search through them online by name (eg. Eliza Lamere). www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/lac-bac/search-recherche/arch.php?Language=engThere is also a good book on Pembina Metis called We Know Who We Are - Metis Identity in a Montana Community by Martha Harroun Foster. It mentions many families by name.
