Crazy Horse News • September 2009
Dear Friends,
Summer is quickly slipping away and the autumn season is upon us. Fall is a wonderful time of the year to visit the Black Hills, with the beautiful fall foliage, sunny days and crisp nights. For vacation planning purposes, don't overlook the fall!
4,362 Ton Blast
August brought a milestone event on the mountain carving. On August 19th, one of the biggest blasts in the history of the project removed 4,362 tons from the 300 bench. The 300 bench represents work being done 300 feet below the top of Crazy Horse's head. Blasts of this magnitude have been very rare in the project's 61-year history. To provide some perspective, 4,362 tons is the equivalent of 363 dump truck loads of rock!
Labor Day Open House and Night Blast
The Labor Day Open House weekend and the ceremonious night blast on September 6th brought a rush of people to the Memorial enjoying the final 3-day weekend of the summer. It was a beautiful evening and we had one of the largest crowds ever for a night blast. The night blast commemorates what would have been the 101st birthday of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and the 1877 death of Crazy Horse.
Raffle Winner Announced!
Also on September 6th, the winning raffle ticket was drawn for the new Harley-Davidson Street Glide motorcycle. The winner is Robert Gilchrist from Washington, West Virginia who was thrilled to get our call! The proceeds from the raffle are being matched by the T. Denny Sanford Foundation challenge grant, with all the money being used for the carving of the horse's head.
New Chopper Ready for Raffle
Next year's motorcycle raffle is already underway and features a custom built chopper created and donated by Eric Gorges of Voodoo Choppers from Michigan. Raffle tickets remain the same as previous years at $20 a ticket or 3 for $50. They are available at the Memorial or by calling 605-673-4681. The drawing for the chopper will be held on September 6, 2010. Click here to see a picture of Eric's creation.
Upcoming Events
Upcoming events at Crazy Horse include the 20th annual Native American Day celebration on Monday, October 12th. This day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the rest of our country, but in South Dakota it is a day to honor the rich heritage and culture of Native Americans. October 12th is also the season finale of our spectacular multi-media laser light show, Legends in Light.
Korczak Remembrance Day 2009
October 20th will mark the final "official" special event of 2009, Korczak Remembrance Day. It is a day set aside to honor the sculptor and allow our visitors to pay their respects with a walk to his tomb at the foot of the mountain. Weather permitting, there will also be a blast on the mountain.
As always, we invite you to join us on Facebook or Twitter if you are part of the social networking scene.
We are grateful to our many friends around the country who are helping to make the Crazy Horse dream a reality. Thank you for your support!
