My father has this photo - but we do not know who the Indians are.
On the back of the photogragh it says "Jas. H. Lucas. Photographer Standing Rock JL "
Does anyone know/recognize?
Thanks, Barbara

I am sorry I don't know who they are. but that photo looks like it was taken in the late 20's or late 30's, and is in great condition.

Hi Barbara, Here's the scoop on the photographer James H. Lucas-
James H. LUCAS, b. Rome, NY, m. Jennie(y) TOMPKINS, b. Chicago, IL. Three daughters: Laura, Ethel, and Hattie, b. St. Paul, MN. James was photographer for New York Gallery in St. Paul, MN during the 1880's. Also took pictures on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Father's name possibly Charles LUCAS.
I checked the MHS digital collections online and do not find it there. You might try contacting the MHS and ask them if they have a collection of Lucas' work. If there are no names written on the back of the photo, there is a good chance they will never be identified. :-( (Breaks my heart.)

hello akhummingbird,
I know the information on the back says Standing Rock, but I wonder if there is a possibility that the man on right could be Joseph Four Bears, Two Kettle.

Dietmar - thank you! I could only find one photo of Four Bears on-line www.franksrealm.com/Indians/tribes/Sioux_Lakota/Two_Kettle/pages/twokettle-fourbears.htm(are there other photos you could share?) - but there is certainly a strong resemblance. More exciting is - it would then make "sense" that my grandfather originally had this photo. My grandfather's grandmother was Wambdi Autepewin/Eagle Woman Who All Look At/Matilda Galpin (her mother was Hunkpapa). In John S. Gray's biography of Eagle Woman, he says that Eagle Woman had a nephew "Four Bears". If this is one and the same person, then Joseph Four Bears would be a 2nd cousin to my grandfather! Now I wonder who the 2nd Indian to the left is? You know - as a young girl, whenever I looked at this photo, I always thought the Indian on the left was an extremely beautiful woman! But now I realize - that during this time period, women wouldn't be wearing pants. Thank you! Barbara

Here´s another photo of him: White Swan III and Joseph Four Bears The photo from the link above (franksrealm) was taken 1870, the one with White Swan probably on the same delegation trip to Washington. If the person in your photo is indeed Four Bears, it seems to have been shot some years later. He looks to me a little bit older. I´m not sure 100 percent, but there is a resemblance.

Hmmm - so if we take the photo of Joseph Four Bears, Two Kettle and put it next to his brother Pretty Bear, Two Kettle (these two were also members of the brave "Fool Soilders" who rescued the Shetak captives in 1862) - and then hold that up to the photo that belonged to my grandfather (descendant of Two Kettle - Hunkpapa Eagle Woman) - might it be that Four Bears is on the left and Pretty Bear on the right? Like you say - we can't be sure 100% - but it's a good hypothesis. OR - maybe it is an older Four Bears on the right, and prehaps that is his son to the left - but I don't know if he had a son. warm regards, Barbara

Barbara,
very interesting. I didn´t know Pretty Bear was a brother of Four Bears. Mmmh, I always thought that the second portrait from left is not Pretty Bear, but Martin Charger, Sans Arc. But maybe I confused it with another photo of that series.
Do you know if Pretty Bear was younger or older than Four Bears and if he was part of the 1870 delegation to Washington?
Best wishes Dietmar
