ARE ANY OF THE INDIAN RESERVATIONS GOING TO BE ABLE TO COME INTO ANY FUNDS FROM THE OIL THAT THEY HAVE FOUND THROUGHOUT NO. AND SO. DAKOTA? OR DID WE SIGN AWAY OUR MINERAL RIGHTS? THIS COULD CERTAINLY BE A LIFE CHANGING MOMENT IN OUR HISTORY, COULDN'T IT. I GOOGLED, BUT IT DOESN'T SAY IF ANY OIL IS ACTUALLY UNDER ANY PARTICULAR RESERVATION. IT SAYS THEY ARE GOING TO DRILL TWO MILES DOWN AND ACROSS. DOES ANYONE KNOW? WE SHOULD KEEP OURSELVES INFORMED. DAWNDAY

DawnDay-- I spent over 40 yr. as a geologist, some of it dealing with Indian mineral resources. North Dakota has lots of oil and gas in the Williston Basin, part of which underlies the Ft. Bethold reservation. Unfortunately only minor amounts of oil and gas have been found in South Dakota, and the prospects there for more are not good. Tribes and allottees have all of their mineral rights and can negotiate leases subject to Government approval and management. Tribes have an additional option of negotiating joint venture agreements that share both profits and risk. That is not to say that "all is well", and "You're in good hands". Bad deals can be approved and goverment incompetence can't be legislated out of existence, but there is no real threat to Indian mineral rights. Wanderer (aka "Tokakte")

WANDERER,
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INFORMATION, VERY INFORMATIVE IT ANSWERED A LOT OF QUESTIONS.
TOO BAD THERE ISN'T MORE OIL FOUND IN SO. DAKOTA, IT COULD HAVE HELPED A LOT OF PEOPLE.
DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE TURBINE WIND MACHINES, ANY HOPE FOR SO. DAK. ON THE UPPER END OF THE LAND?
AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY,

Wind energy (and solar) are ecellent options for Indian country as a whole. We all know that SD and ND both have a great deal of wind...both politically and naturally. Windmills are sprouting like some SciFi forest in SW MN. Fossil fuels, oil, gas, and coal, produce income for landowners, and that is good. But renewable energy can do that also, and it also holds the greater promise of providing energy right where it's needed most..on the Rez itself. Wanderer

WANDERER,
AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY. AND FOR SUCH GOOD INFORMATION AND YOU ALSO MADE ME LAUGH.
I JUST HOPE THE LANDOWNERS YOU MENTIONED WILL BE THE LAKOTA PEOPLE, AND THEY WILL BE ABLE TO COME TOGETHER IF GIVEN AN OFFER. SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING. I UNDERSTAND SO. DAKOTA HAS SOME OF THE POOREST RESERVATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES,( IN FACT IS FT. THOMPSON, CROW CREEK). I TEND TO BE PREJUDICE, SINCE I CAME FROM FT. THOMPSON, CROW CREEK AREA. BUT I DO HOPE THEY COME IN ON EITHER OIL, WINDMILL OR SOMETHING BESIDES THE CASINO. THAT ALONE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE MAKING ANY ONE RICH.
I WOULD IMAGINE THE WINDMILLS WILL BE AN EYE SORE, BUT SO WERE TELEPHONE POLES AND PEOPLE GOT USED TO SEEING THEM. GIVEN THE OPTIONS, OF DEPENDING ON FOREIGN OIL. SOLAR PANELS, WINDMILLS MAY BE SOMETHING WE WILL HAVE TO GET USED TO SEEING.
OR BETTER YET GIVE THE INDIANS BACK OUR LAND THAT WAS TAKEN FROM US. WHILE WE WERE IN CHARGE OF THIS LAND, IT THRIVED. WE WEREN'T INTERESTED IN THE GOLD OR THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. JUST LIVING.
I PROBABLY SOUND LIKE AN (AIM) MEMBER, BUT I'M JUST A WOMAN THAT HAS PROBABLY LIVED A LITTLE LONGER THAN MOST OF YOU, AND AM SICK OF WHAT I HAVE SEEN.

DawnDay-- You certainly owe me no apologies for sounding a lttle militant. I'm an old geezer myself, but I'm proud to have been a pro-Indian activist for my entire life...and I've been called much worse! wanderer

WANDERER,
I LIKE SOMEONE WHO IS NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK THE TRUTH, AND BE HONEST ABOUT IT.
I DID GROW UP FOLLOWING RUSSELL MEANS (AIM), AROUND LIKE A PUPPY DOG. HE WAS NOT BLOOD YOU SEE. A 1ST COUSIN BY MARRIAGE. MY MOTHER'S 2ND HUSBAND B. FEATHER, WAS RUSSELL'S UNCLE. I THOUGHT HE WAS THE CUTEST THING THAT WALKED, MY OTHER COUSIN DONNA FAY AND I WOULD CHASE RUSSELL AND HIS BROTHER DALE ALL OVER, UNTIL THEY COULD LOOSE US. I GUESS HIS ATTITUDE MUST HAVE RUBBED OFF. HE WASN'T RAISED ON THE RESERVATION EITHER, BUT HE SAW THE INJUSTICES. AND WANTED TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT IT. THE ONLY WAY HE KNEW. ALTHROUGH I THINK IT WENT TO HIS HEAD, A LITTLE NARCISSISTIC, BUT HEY! IT GOT HIM IN THE MOVIES. I WOULD THINK YOU WOULD HAVE TO REALLY BELIEVE IN YOURSELF TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE LIKE THAT TO ACTUALLY BE A REAL LIVE MOVIE STAR.
I WAS OUT THERE WITH A PETITION AND GOT A LOT OF SIGNATURES, TO HAVE DENNIS BANKS RELEASED FROM PRISON. THAT WAS MY 1 MINUTE. I REALLY ADMIRED THEM.
SO I GUESS MY ATTITUDE SLIPS OUT HERE AND THERE, EVERY NOW AND THEN.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

I've known and liked Russ since the early '60's when he moved down to Albuquerque for a time. I haven't always agreed with him, but I've always approved of his passion if not his wisdom. I am also on close terms with Clyde Bellcourt who was a close friend of my late sister. Like the rest of us, those old AIM warhorses are getting "a little long in the tooth", but they represent an important an exciting time for Indians. Wanderer

WANDERER, NICE TO MEET YOU. I WAS A LITTLE YOUNGER THAN RUSSELL, BUT ONLY A LITTLE. UNFORTUNATELY WOMEN DO NOT LIKE TO SAY WERE OLDER. WE PREFER THE TERM. WERE JUST GETTING BETTER. HAHA FUNNY THING IS I REALLY DO NOT FEEL THAT MUCH OLDER, I GUESS BECAUSE I HAVE MY DAUGHTER AROUND ME ALL THE TIME AND SHE KEEPS ME YOUNG AT HEART. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, THEY CAN'T TAKE THOSE AWAY. DAWNDAY

REGARDING THE 60 MINUTES PROGRAM ON T.V. SUNDAY,
THE BUSINESS MAN , T. BOONE PICKENS IS TRYING TO GET THE TURBINE WIND MACHINES THROUGH THE MIDWEST ALLEY FROM CANADA - TEXAS, CUTTING THROUGH THE DAKOTA'S. IF I UNDERSTOOD HE SAID EMINENT DOMAIN WOULD BE ENACTED (5TH AMENDMENT), HOWEVER THE LAND OWNERS WOULD BE COMPENSATED USUALLY PAID A FAIR MARKET VALUE , WHICH WOULD INCLUDE VIRTUALLY ANYTHING, SOMETIMES CALLED CONDEMNATION (TAKING OR EXPROPRIATION).
IF HE OR ANYONE ELSE IS ABLE TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT, THE UNITED STATES WOULD AT LEAST HAVE OUR OWN RENEWABLE ENERGY. SUCH AS HYDROPOWER (water), SOLAR, BIOMASS (from waste products) GEOTHERMAL (heat from our earths core, especially countries that entail the Ring of Fire regions of the earth. For the U.S. that would be Hawaii, Alaska, and Calif. especially No. Calif. has the most reservoirs of geothermal energy, which have gotten Electricity since 1960) AND FROM THE WIND TURBINE MACHINES. RATHER THAN NUCLEAR PLANTS, WHICH SCARES THE H..L OUT OF ME. WE SEEM TO HAVE ENOUGH RESOURCES TO BE INDEPENDENT OF OIL COUNTRIES.
SO WHY ARE WE STILL WATCHING THE OIL PRICES EVERY DAY.
IT APPARENTLY WILL TAKE MONEY TO MAKE THESE RENEWABLE ENERGIES WORK, PROBABLY LESS THAN THE NEEDLESS WAR IN IRAQ. WHICH WAS SUPPOSE TO BE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, BUT WAS FOR A FEW BUSINESSES TO MAKE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM, NOT TO MENTION HAVE CONTROL OF IRAQ'S OIL. I'M DIGRESSING AGAIN. I'M MERELY STATING WHAT IS THE TRUTH.
MAY GOD FORGIVE ALL OF US, FOR WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO OUR PLANET EARTH. , DAWNDAY : )

I JUST HEARD THE OTHER DAY, THAT FT. THOMPSON PAYS MORE FOR THEIR ELECTRICITY THAN MOST IN SO. DAKOTA. AS I UNDERSTAND WHEN THE DAM WAS PUT RIGHT THROUGH FT. THOMPSON THE PEOPLE WOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING FOR ELECTRICITY, MUCH LESS HAVE TO PAY MORE.
I DON'T KNOW WHY THE LAKOTA PEOPLE GET USED SO MUCH BY OUR GOVERNMENT AND I SUPPOSE BUSINESS PEOPLE THAT SEE THERE IS MONEY TO BE MADE FROM THE AREA. BUT I DO HOPE THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN THE AREA'S OF THE TURBINE WIND MACHINES WOULD BE COMPENSATED, AT LEAST FAIR PRICE.
IT DOESN'T SEEM TO ME THE CASINO'S HAVE HELPED THE LAKOTA INDIANS, OTHER THAN GIVE THEM A PLACE TO SPEND THEIR MONEY AND DRINK. HOW IS THAT SUPPOSE TO HAVE HELPED THEM. SOMEONE IS MAKING MONEY, I PRESUME. OTHERWISE THE CASINO'S WOULDN'T STILL BE THERE. THAT'S WHY LAS VEGAS, IS LAS VEGAS. BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE LEAVE THEIR MONEY THERE.
THE CASINO'S OFFER A DRAWING EVERY HOUR OR SO, WHICH KEEPS THE PEOPLE THERE LONGER.
IN ANY CASE, I HOPE SOMETHING BETTER FOR THE LAKOTA PEOPLE.
GOD BLESS'

But renewable energy can do that also, and it also holds the greater promise of providing energy right where it's needed most..on the Rez itself. Wanderer IN ANSWER TO THIS POSTING ON OYATE SOME TIME AGO, I JUST SAW THIS ARTICLE IN THE ARGUS LEADER REGARDING A PLANT TO MANUFACTURE WIND TURBINE TOWERS, WITH JOBS. AND A NEW STEP WITH HOPES IN GETTING MORE TURBINE MACHINES ON THE RESERVATIONS TO BE UTILITY INDEPENDENT. Construction of plant slows Wind-turbine tower maker focuses on building Texas factory Scott Carlson • sdcarlson@argusleader.com • Jan Construction has ground to crawl at the 120,000 square-foot plant for Tower Tech Systems in Brandon. But the slowdown isn't because of the slumping national economy; it's the result of the Wisconsin-based maker of heavy-duty towers for wind turbines temporarily shifting gears to accelerate building a sister plant in Abilene, Texas, Tech Tower spokesman Jeff Lambert said Thursday. "We are slowing down construction in Sioux Falls and focusing more resources on Abilene," Lambert said, noting the slowdown began last month. "But our intent is to get the ( Brandon plan) done by the first half of 2009." Jeff Eckhoff, executive director of the Minnehaha County Economic Development Association, said Tower Tech's focus on the Abilene plant will enable them to get that factory finished first and then resume regular work on the Brandon plant, which is on a 42-acre site in the Corson Development Park. Tower Tech, a subsidiary of Illinois-based Broadwind Energy, is spending between $22 million to $24 million for its Brandon plant, he said. Sioux Falls-based Henry Carlson Construction is the general contractor on the two Tower Tech plants. Carlson project manager Jerry Fromm said he expects work to finish next week on the Abilene plant but hadn't heard when Tower Tech plans to resume regular work on the Brandon factory. Tower Tech's expansion plans come amid growing interest across the country in developing alternative energy sources, Eckhoff said. "The wind industry has got a tremendous amount of potential," he said. "We are seeing a lot of activity nationwide and certainly in the upper Midwest." Tower Tech builds towers for wind turbines with the structures built in sections and measuring up to 200 feet in length. The tower sections are transported on flat-bed trucks or rail cars. Lambert said Tower Tech is building the Brandon and Abilene plants so that it can be a nationwide provider of wind turbine towers. Tower Tech also operates a plant in Manitowoc, Wis. By adding two more plants, Tower Tech can serve more customers and cut costs for shipping its towers to wind turbine makers, he said. Tower Tech plans to initially employ about 150 people at its Brandon plant and is accepting job applications, Lambert said. Nick Lanning, Brandon assistant city administrator, said Tower Tech will be a boon for the city's tax base. "It is one of the more significant projects that we have had in while," he said. Reach Scott Carlson at 331-2318 Construction of a wind-turbine tower factory in Brandon has slowed as its owner, Tower Tech Systems, is focusing on another plant. Copyright ©2008 Argus Leader Media.
