Hi gang, I received today, a pile of "probates" from NARA in KC. I just wanted to spread the word that THESE ARE NOT THE PROBATES YOU ARE HOPING TO FIND! These are simply lists consisting of the name of the deceased and all their living heirs determined at the time the estate was probated. If this is all the info you need, you will be pleased with them. I sure would not call them probates though. Oh well, another day, another road-block. I will try to find out just what all the SD Hist. Soc. has for probates for Sisseton. Vicky

Barbara at NARA says there are over 2000 pages for Sisseton! They are for the years (approx.) 1912 to 1925. I guess they would be helpful for anyone only needing the names of the kids. You only need to email them with the name you are looking for, the tribe (they have these for Santee also, but I don't know what years) and the date of death. That's all they need to find them.

Vicky, when they list the names of children or heirs, do they distinquish between who is a child of and who is only an heir in some other fashion? As you know, a person who has inherited land interest, doesnt necessarily mean they are their child. Example, my ancestor shows as having land interest in the allottment of Mahpiyahotanka when he inherited it by his father's 2nd wife, not his own mother. Tamara

I can give it a shot Jon. I have about 30 pages, and some will have to be scanned twice (big NARA paper), and I'm not movin' too fast these days! I'll post them over in the "records" section so look for them there. CAN YOU POST THE REST OF THESE PROBATE RECORDS ON OUR SITE?...IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! JON

the sample of the Heirship you posted looks like the format of Heirships that I saw on a microfilm from the Latter Day Saints, tha t I think they must have copied fromthe NARA. what a great find you have made vicky.the lady, Ms. Hanson at the south Dakota Historical society did mention that they also had Heirships on Microfilm from the NARA, I wonder if they are the same as what you have?

Sometime back, my contact at the NARA told me that they believed SDHS to have everything they had the sort of records I was inquiring about (sisseton agency). From what I now understand, that if the plan but it has not been accomplished just yet.

What they DO HAVE are wonderful records for anyone who had an ancestor who died with NO HEIRS. These are on microfilm and not indexed, so one would probably need to go there themselves and dig. Vicky
