The Half Breed/Mixed Blood Scrips at Lake Pepin are a very interesting part of the Mdewakanton Dakota Sioux past. It is also a very important part of understanding the migration that occurred through the planned and deliberate policies of the Kingpins and politicos that established the covert policy of removal, annilation and extermination of our anscestors, in order to secure the valuable land holdings and properties that the Mdewakanton people enjoyed and thrived upon........at least before the westward push of the land grab hit its creshendo just before the 1862 insurgency.
If you look closely at historical maps of the Lake Pepin area at or around the City of Wabasha, you will clearly see the actual boundaries of the oblong shape of the Half Breed reservation...which is reserved lands for taking of land scrip 80 or 160 acre tracts to be used forever, through heirship and descendancy, and which was available upon formal request or affidavit for those that felt they were qualified to have said scrip. The US was supposedly the direct Grantor of said land scrip holdings, and the scrip lands were taken from parcels within the Half Breed Line. This is an extremely important of the overall genesis of our histories, because there is still quite a major mystery as to what happened to so much of the lands and scrip that was supposedly granted to our anscestors, forever, and to thier heirs..........unlike, some of the Indian land certificates of the day, which attempted to install reversion clauses within said certificates, to try to keep them as life estates and not automatically to stay within the descendant families upon death and distributition of probate or wills. I think it is important that we all study this aspect of the history as well, because this was part and parcel of the grand plan by Ramsey and his coconspirators, to create potentially impossible situations for the Minnesota Dakota Sioux, so as to make them desparate, and willing to part with their valuable resources at times of great suffering and need.....furthermore, these scrips were being granted just a few years prior to the main cataclysmic event in August 1862 which forever changed the lives of so many.......
please just keep it in mind, and put these things on your checklist to study more. I know I am doing just that. Keep up the good thoughts and the good work. Someone is watching us, and silently pulling for us to stand up, all of us, at this great time in history.

Your Friend Jazzdog JD, This issue was one of the first I had focused on (and later obsessed about, lol). Some of the things I had looked at years ago in just basic research for Grandfather, were the names in History of Renville County. It amazed me how many of the half-breed families are noted as having lands and then it states "the first claims filed after the uprising" ... the again, a few of the half-breed families are again listed. It interested me as I had expected that no one of indian blood would have been allowed to have lands after the removal act of 1862. One document I found at library of congress showed that lands were given to Martha Wacouta, Mary Jane Wacouta and Lucy Charron. Of course there are others. My own ancestor had lands in Camp Township and of course my aunties always wanted to know what happened to it. One aunt in particular had done some research on it... but it was before the lawsuit and it would be nice to go over it again with the current issues in mind. Appreciative as ever.. Tamara
