Relatives, I have the records that Grace mentioned, but my next dilemma is that my computer will not recognize a blank CD in my computer for me to upload the information. Does anyone have ideas that I can use to get my computer to read the CDs? The other option for is to copy all of it and send it to Jackie to put up for everyone's access. What will work? SZ

Sherwyn, I found this old posting I had done on the James board. I think you are going to love it. Here it is ready? Joe Jesse's daughter's Family Bible Posted by: Grace Hopkins (ID *****9316) Date: December 19, 2002 at 11:16:48 of 40998 Here's what I see it say's, Helena, her father Joseph Chase, her mother Martha Wakuta. Then it says' Joseph father Jesse James and his mother Maggie Wabasha. Then Martha's father Sam Wakuta mother Nancy Wapaha then it goes to Jesse's father Rev. Robert James mother Zerelda Cole. Then Maggie Wabasha father Thomas George Wabasha mother Mary. Then Nancy Wapaha mother Mary Stone father unknown. This came out of Helena Chase's Family Bible. Now if the James say's that the Family bible can't be altered in anyway. What do they have to say about this bible? My cousin has it in his care. And that's who gave me this information I have posted above. SZ

There can be several causes to this 1. The cd in damaged 2. the cd player itself is to old needs replaced.. 3. needs newer drivers 4. The laser eye is dirty 5. your computer may need to be rebooted to reset the cd rom drivers .. 6. wrong type of Rewrite CDS Dekis, I think that is right? I hope I am calling you Uncle. Relatives, First of all, I want to say HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone as this is the first day of Spring. In our Indian Way, this is the beginning of a New Cycle, a New Rotation of the planet around our Sun. By nature, we go by Nature. I saw all the green grass sprouts coming to work and the first dandilion on the lawn uptown when I got gas. It's a wonderful feeling to see the newness of Mother Earth, it's so refreshing. Now, here's what I'm going to do: I have made a hardcopy of the Bible Record and I'm mailing it to Jackie today, snail mail because I think for me to fix my computer may take longer than I expected. This will be the best way for everyone's benefit for now. I know Jackie will post it here on this site as sson as she gets it. It's an awesome document. Sherwyn

Thank you Sherwyn for all you do. You always seem to go that extra mile (literally) to get the facts and oral history for the rest of us. Your reminder to look to mother earth to know where we are is appreciated. The bit of sunshine and cool breeze that blows through my house literally sings "Spring". I love this time of year as well and it seems to fuel all of my good intentions.
Grace, thank you again for sharing this fascinating story with all of the avid dakota history hunters that are your new friends here at Oyate. I think the word you were looking for was Deksi or "deck shee" for Uncle. My own deksi tells my children to refer to him as "cousin" instead of Grandpa which results in being referred to as "Grandpa/Cousin" lol

Mitakuyapi, I also have some Birth Certificates, Baptismal Records, Death Certificates and one Marriage Record of the Chase Family. I'll go home tonight to look over each record and also send copies of them to Jackie. It was great driving to Arkansas to visit with Grace. She had more than I had expected and it was also great to meet another relative who I may not have met, had it not been for me finding a connection to others on the Wabashaw Family Tree. I spent 23 hours copying records and photos. Hearing all the stories and names of each of them is such a wonderful reward after a 14 hour drive. I spent 5 days in Arkansas during my Spring Break to get these for all who would use them to share with their family members. I hope that the stories are passed on and the information is shared with the youth especially. They are so inspiring to see and it helps to put a face to a name. I look forward to returning to Arkansas soon to meet with Grace again. She's been so inspiring in her willingness to share her records with us all. Pidamayedo. Nina Wopida Tanka. With Much Gratitude, Sherwyn

I commend you for sharing the information with Jackie so she can get it on this Oyate Exchange and onto the rest of us that would truly enjoy all of those works. I wanted to ask you another question Sherwyn since you are from the Yankton Sioux Reservation and if you are familiar with the current Disestablishment case that is ongoing in the Federal District Court in South Dakota? There is another site on Oyate Exchange brought by Stephanie on the Disestablishment of the Yankton Sioux Reservation. Please provide comment and guidance Sherwyn if you are familiar with that case as it appears those Tribal Attorneys are in need of information pertinent to the case. Again, SherwynZ., thank you for your efforts in helping Tribal members gain much valuable information linking them to their relatives. This is wanbligi.

Sherwyn, I think you have more than 1 marriage record. You did take moms and dads right? And I think you also have Nancy to John Wapaha. That or you have her death certificate. And I think you have mine too. Folks what stuff he has is more than what any of you will need to get what you want done. I helped some other person with this stuff and they never got backl to me on it so I think I am out of luck with the lawsuit. So remember me.LOL I got to go Today is My Mans Birthday. Taking the time to just hand out with him. Nite Grace Mitakuyapi, I also have some Birth Certificates, Baptismal Records, Death Certificates and one Marriage Record of the Chase Family. After you get the problem solved, you should create a new file to hold the documents. then scan and save the documents to thisnew file onyour hard drive. then you can burn it off to a CD. Is it possible that you need to update your CD Burner program? I hope this helps.

I'm not sure what the problem is at this time. My computer just won't read the CD when I put in the Drive. It's like it can't see it. I was thinking that one of my teenage son's downloaded something off of the internet that had a virus or something. My computer is fairly new and it was working fine a couple of months ago, when I last used the CD or DVD Drives. I'll try all that has been suggested to me and see if I can fix the problem. I'll even buy some more CD-R or CD+R? Which is better? Sherwyn

Hi sherwynz
Mr. Mark Diedrich, puts foward the theory, that Nancy St. Clair (Anpahdiwin), is the daughter of Betsey Mary St. Clair, "Old Bets," (Hazainyankewin). There is no direct evidence due to the non detailed record keeping by the Indian Agency and no physical record keeping of births and deaths by the bands.
Mr. Diedrich base this claim on circumstantial evidence, such as; 1. Betsey's child bearing years, and Nancy year of birth date falls in that range.
2. Diedrich reason that Round Wind was probably married to Nancy Anphdiwin (St. Clair). There were perhaps two of Betsey daughters who were record the wives of Many Hails and Round Wind. One may have been Mary Payah and another Appearing Day Woman (Anpahdiwin), later known as Nancy St. Clair. At the treaty council of Traverse des Sioux, Little Crow (Taoyateduta), the son of Big Thunder, attended with some of his warriors, including Betsey's son, Taopi, and Round Wind (Tatemima). Round Wind was a relative of the famed trader Joseph Renville. Round Wind had two wives in the 1830's, and was a headman of the Lac qui Parle Wahpetons. He had come down from Lac qui Parle with the new "Little Crow" in 1846, subsequently married one of Betsey's daughters. He probably married Betsey's daughter after removing to Kaposia in 1846. Nancy would of been about fifteen years old. He was the brother of Mary Renville, who was related to the Little Crow family. Medicine Woman was apparently widowed from 1852-56. and does not seem to have been the wife of Many Hails or Round Wind. Round Wind had one wife and two children on the 1853 and 1857 Kaposian annuity rolls. Since Scarlet Woman had five in her family in 1862, she was probably not Round Wind's wife either.
Add support of Diedrich theory, Nancy was married before with children, maybe on the 1900 Federal Census, Nancy response was; birth Oct. 1831, age 68, married 31 years, 5 children, 1 living (Elizebeth, Isabel), her mother, father and herself are Sioux born in Minnesota. On the 1885 and 1890 Santee census, Charles St. Clair relationship to Nancy Anphdiwin is listed as grandson, and parents are listed as Trombly and Winonna.
3. The adoption of the surname "St. Clair," that was first adopt by Job St. Clair, Lighting Maker (Wakandikaga), who is listed 1886 McLeod Census, and then by Nancy St. Clair who was located at the Santee Agency, Nebraska. Surname were not used, because family members live as a group in a village, or a band, and its said that if a person was from a village, they are more likely related to Chief or headman. Indian names were used to distinguish the individual, in which a person may recieve a birth-order name as a child, then through achievement or an event by a individual earn a Indian name, which may occur more than once.
All I have is my memories of my Mother and Grandmother talking about Nancy St. Clair at the kitchen table, recounting that she travel a lot to Minnesota and she send a box of lace baby clothes when my mother was born. They indicated that Nancy had relatives in Minnesota. The lace craft was taught to Indian women, in connection with the Episcopal mission, instituted by Sibyl Carter. Amelia St. Clair (Mrs. Henry W.) and Mary Wabasha were also evolved in Lace Making.
Sherwyn
On the Register of Santee Indian Families- Ca. 1902, Nancy list her father as Magahdahiyaye and mother as Canhuyuhewin. The page of the register looks to be done in the same handwriting, could the name Magahdahiyaye be corrupted spelling of Mazasagyi (Iron Sword), and Canhuyuhewin with Nancy been a little facetious in saying Cankuwastewin (Good Road Woman). Or, do you know what Magahdahiyaye and Canhuyuhewin mean.
fwaukazoo
The law makes no distinction between the weight given to either direct or circumstantial evidence. The U.S. Supreme Court has stated that "circumstantial evidence is intrinsically no different from testimonial [direct] evidence." Circumstantial evidence is usually a theory, supported by a significant quantity of corroborating evidence. Circumstantial evidence is generally admissible in court unless the connection between the fact and the inference is too weak to be of help in deciding the case. Circumstantial evidence is best explained by saying what it is not - it is not direct evidence from a witness who saw or heard something. Circumstantial evidence is a fact that can be used to infer another fact. Circumstantial evidence is unrelated facts that, when considered together, can be used to infer a conclusion about something unknown. There is a public perception that such evidence is weak, but the probable conclusion from the circumstances may be so strong that there can be little doubt as to a vital fact.
