I'm wondering if someone can help me out with a question I have about my great, great, great-grandmother's (Tatewinorca Dumarce) family? Her half brother is listed as Matocatka (Chief Left Hand Bear). I have seen this name shown as Oglala and Wahpeton. Are there two different people with this name? I know that some relatives claimed that the family is part Oglala but after I did some family research I figured that this was incorrect. My grandfather was listed as Sisseton at Hampton Institute and this seems to be correct. I have found his aunts and uncles listed as Sisseton and as Mdewakanton. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Macintosh: The Left Bear and DeMarce families are Wahpeton. Their descendants still carry the family names and presently live at Tokio, ND on the Spirit Lake Reservation. Chief Leftbear was the leader of Wahpetons in the Bdecan (woodlake) District. He died in 1905. Hope this helps, Louie from Tokio.

Louie,
Thank you for the confirmation. On the Internet and in a calendar I found there is a photo of Chief Left Hand Bear and the captions all read Oglala so I was just checking in case there were two people with the same or similar names. I will assume that those labeling the photo have the information wrong and it is Chief Left Bear of the Wahpeton.

McIntosh: I am sure the caption on the photo is correct. Left Handed Bear could have been a popular name. We know that everything in Dakota country moves clockwise. The name implies a deeper - sacred meaning, not just a bear that is left handed. I wrote a little biography of Matocatka. Contact me; Louis_Garcia@littlehoop.edu

The photo is one of many that Agant Waugh took at Spirit Lake (Ft. Totten) circa 1893. The set was at the old Heye Foundation in New York City - now probably in Washington, D.C. at the Museum of the American indian. Seated in the front row is Frank Palmer, Ecanajinka (Standing Forever - the famous Scout), unidentified, Waanatan II (Rushes Against [Charger] -the famous Sisseton Chief), Matocatka (Left Handed Bear- the Wahpetun Chief) and Agent Waugh. The two children are unidentified. The names of the policemen posted to the photo on American-Tribes website are misspelled. Their names are on other photos of the set. Louie

I was checking to see how my post appeared and discoved a post from August asking about Simon Short Lighting. Simon Wakanhdiptecena was the first Elder of the Bdecan (Woodlake) Presbyterian Church, Tokio, ND. Cantemaza (Iron Heart) who was with Little Crow was the second Elder. The church is still going after 132 years. Louie
