Found in newspaper Browns Valley Tribune, Sisseton, Roberts County, South Dakota dated August 19, 1915 ----- John Redthunder Dies ----- John Redthunder, the well-known Indian, of Bryant township, Roberts county, died on Friday, Aug. 6, 1915, after a very short illness from an attack of pneumonia, aged 68. The funeral was held on Sunday from the Presbyterian Mission church, of which deceased was a member, and the remains were buried in the church yard. John Redthunder was truly a good Indian. He was honored and respected by all, for he was a great friend of the white people as well as the members of his own people. He was a devout Christian, and was one of the main supports of the little Mission church near his home. Redthunder claimed to be the rightful, hereditary chief of the Sisseton and Wahpeton Sioux, and many of the Indians agreed with him, although he had never been formally recognized by the tribe as a whole. The Redthunder band was friendly to the whie people during the massacre of 1862, and he has always used his influence to have the Indians take up the ways of civilization. His children have been well educated, having been sent to Carlisle, where they graduated.--- Browns Valley Tribune

John Redthunders father is Icicarape SW#1026 B.1826 D. 2-10-1896 mother Icahdiwin/Icardayewin SW#733 B.1824 D.8-18-1899 from probate papers. John was my grandmother Martha Redthunder/Spiders father. The newspaper says he claimed to be the rightful, hereditary chief but wasn't recognized. So I'm wondering if Icicarape's father could be either Waanatan or Waneta? I know through research on my fathers side my great-great grandfather Gabriel Renville was chosen to be chief threw the help of Joseph Brown who worked for the Army. Gabriel was a scout for the army.
