copied from the Courant, Sisseton, SD Thursday June 19, 1913 DAVID FAIRBAULT PASSES AWAY David Fairbault died at his home adjoining Sisseton Agency, S.D. on June 11, 1913 and was buried at Good Will Mission near there Friday. The deceased was a prominent pioneer being a nephew of Alex Fairbault after whom the city and county of Fairbault, Minn., is named. "Little Dave" as he was known in earlier days was born in Minnesota 72 years ago. After the Indian troubles of 1862 he was with the Santee band of Sioux at Crow Creek Agency, where he married Mary Eastman, a sister of Rev. John Eastman, who survives him, their three children having departed this life before. For a time the deceased was located at Flandreau with some of the Santee Sioux who took homesteads. Later he opened a store in the Hills near Marvin on the Watertown road, where the writer first met him in June 1882 after which he kept store in Wilmot till 1884, when he enrolled with the Sisseton Indians. He also kept store at Sisseton Agency for years and has been identified with these Indians ever since his enrollment. He was elected assistant to Chief Renville under the tribal organization and was also tribal secretary of these Indians for a term. He was a well disposed man and had many friends and a wide acquaintances, who will remember him kindly and whose condolence is extended to the bereaved widow.
