 Mary Rouse
« Thread Started on May 15, 2008, 5:48pm »

I am looking for information on Mary Rouse. She was born in approximately 1848, and I believe she was also known as Wakan Ka Hominee, or Icahomniwim. I would like to know any info about where she was born, or who her parents were. Also, any info about what tribe she originates from; and what her name translates into. The only thing I know is that she married John Rouse, and they had eight children:
Paul, Mary, Harry, John, George, Fanny, Lucy, and Jane.

Thank you for your time,
Faith.

Faith: it would help if you would provide with a place of birth or at least give us where her husband was born and where they got married and when.
Can i assume that you are a descendantof her and or her husband? if not, I will be unable to help you.

The only info i have is a family outline by a daughter of George Rouse . It is signed sept 1977 and says John Rouse and Wakan Ka Hominee ( Icahomniwin) homesteaded in charles mix county. I am told also that the family is on the 1880 bon homme census (township 94) and it reads : Name......Age .........Place of birth

John H Rouse 46 NY
Mary wife 32 Dak
Carol P. son 14 Dak (My GG Grandfather) Aka Jack & John
Fannie dau 12 Dak (married William Bean?)
George W son 10 Dak (married Lucy Traversie ?)
Harry son 8 Dak (married Eunice Hare?)
Jane dau 6 Dak (married Alfred Bonnan?)
Mary dau 4 Dak

My GG and many of his brother and sisters can be found on various yankton census but I can not find Mary anywhere.
Some how i have a photo copy of baptismal records for George Fannie,John, Mary,Lucy and a Jennie?? Last name spelled Rouseau Parents Are John Rouseau and Wakanpahomniwin. So with the different spellings and not knowing where the baptismal records even came from makes this a big challenge.

You might try going to the section of our website that has the family Trees done by Father madlon.
According to that Census you mentioned, Mary was born in Dakota Territory. Type Dakota Territory Map in your browser, This will give you a pictorial idea of the area in which she was born. If John H. Rouse married by Indian custom, you may find reference to this in Carol P. Rouse's heirship papers.
You also might contact the South Dakota Historical Society Archives in Pierre ,SD. and see what they may have on the Rouse family.
Here are some more Church Records you might check:In the church Records Oyate are the registers of some of the churches in south Dakota, that you can search through, as there may be a chance they may have been married by Ceremony. The If you have no luck with the church Records, then the baptismal records for the children would be proof that they were their parents.

John H. Rouse, it appears may have been married 2x.(See the PM's I sent you today) The Mary I. is the second wife, and the Mary W. appears to be the first wife and mother of the children listed in the 1880 Census you mentioned.
I am wondering too though, now, if Mary w.'s name may translate to Turning Holy woman( Wakan: holy or sacred, and kahomni( turning) win(woman)..

Hermin1,
thanks for the Canoin and Mary Rouse stuff.I know your looking for Canoin through Struck by the Ree.In trying to figure my own I have this census or whatever from I believe about 1902 . It has Canoin being the mother to Thomas Rising Cloud age61,James Madbull age 53 and Mary PrettyFeather age 41.I have Lucy PrettyFeather's Baptizm with Mary (Rising Cloud) Madbull.I don't know what that means on the baptism. The only place I have been able to find MadBull is in Remember Your Relatives Volume 1 ,page 29 Tatanka Witco. It all suggests to me that Mary father was MadBull.
I think that alot of the stuff that your helping Faith with came from me or part of my family.
I'm was a Rouse then my adopted dad remarried. Think ,You know your a redneck if your stepmom is also your(fill in the blank.)
The Rouseau is in Holy Name baptisms page 44.All of the names and birthdays match, but not the last name.I didn't know if it was a big coincidence ,and alot of these things I realy don't know how to follow up on.
I would also like to thank you for the Greek lesson ,it is funny, but I don't think I'll teach any more of my grandchildren to say that.

Since this is a Rouse line, has anyone heard of Mary Jane Mcgoota-Mcguta or Maguta? We are in Mary & John Rouse's son Harry's line. We also have Martha Maka Rouse which we have as Turning Rock. Any feedback on these two names (other than that above?)

Thanks, Brokenrope's

COOL! We are working on this area right now. I have set the George Thompson side on the back burner right now as I only need Louisa's maiden name and I am done!

I am going to try to put together a "real family tree" for the Rouse side of the Family. I will get it to you when I finish.

Thanks for writing cuz! Carol Brokenrope
PS - who were your parents, grandparents, and gggrandparents? I'd like to know the stories...

Hello, I still haven't found anything on John's Mary. I hope to go to the MN archives next week and the BIA. I would love to know any info and I will share anything I find. The family is documented in yankton and pipestone. Also i believe Harry , George and the other siblings were baptized at Holy Name church. If anyone knows who she( Harry s Mother) is and her parents i would love to know.

Hey Carol Cuz,
my mom was Margaret, her dad was Harold Stephen, her mom was Helen PrettyFeather.Harolds dad was Harry, his mom was Eunice Hare.
On Helen's side I know her mom was Lucy PrettyFeather.I have a couple of things that say her dad was a BlackOwl but in a probate somebody made a statement that Moses Archambue was her dad.

Faith I have seen the same baptism. I beleive it came from Holy Name 1.I have asked about it because in that same bunch of stuff I saw Rouse. They both have the same names and ages, all the kids match as far as names and ages. I don't know why they would have them with two names so close together.

I have just recently gotten back on to the site after multiple computer crashes. I too come from the John H. Rouse line. Carrol P. Rouse(Jack) married Emily(Emma) LeClair and my Grandmothers maiden name was Ellen Rouse. So we are pursuing similar information. I have found the Holy Name Church records and also noted the difference of the spelling of the names. But, I suspect that they are the same family. I was of the impression that Margaret LeClair was also Tannini One Running married to Charles H. LeClair. At least this is what we are trying to determine. Anyway we would greatly appreciate any follow information that could be offered.

Mary:
How far back can you track the LeClair's?
Mark Diedrich just published a biography of Little Fish.
His father was supposed to be a LeClair.
Little Fish or Tiyowaste was born about 1825.
He was known to have at least one brother and a sister.
Later,
Louie

I noticed that in The Holy Name Church Vol 1, the last name is spelled Rouseau if I recall right. But all the names and dates seem to match.

Thats the one I saw. I beleave I saw both Rouse and Rouseau.
All of the kid's names, birth dates and ages matched.Everything matched.Do you know how to prove that they are the same people?
I was adopted,my adopted parents were white. They got divorced. My dad remarried. His second wife was also white. The second wife's grandchildren relate back to the Leclair's.
It's a small world.
