BIA is good for pine ridge, no more favoriteism and as for posting my personal info on the open page it isnt going to happen, i sne you a private message, and i hope i didnt imply you were a toka in my message. My family has a high profile and we do enjoy our privacy, as for the BIA Issue, I am sure they are too extreme in some cases, but in some it is deserved, no more favoriteism, I still have family on the force, but people dont get to do what they want anymore. To me its been a positive change, and maybe the gangmembers around your house will finally get the wake up call they deserve. There is a lot of crime in some communities, some more than others, I enjoy the semi country area where I live, but its good to know that they are watching out for all of them. I heard a story about a loneman bus driver being arrested for going 75 in a 45 zone right through oglala, so what is a bus driver doing endangering those childrens lives? Things need to change on pine ridge for the better, sure like any other issue it has its pro's and con's but i see and foresee a good change in the long run. Bust all the drug dealers, who are related to some of the ex oglala lakota police officers. And as for the spelling of my name or nickname, it is a lakota name or partial of my full name i was given at a yuwipi, and there is no proper spelling, the priests who wrote our dictionaries dont even know how to spell our language, there are probably about 18 ways to spell wakiyan, this one is the easiest to decpher for non lakotas, so i chose it.
WAKIYAN,
HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY CHANGES, WITH THE NEW ADMINISTRATION THERE IN PINE RIDGE. I HOPE FOR THE GOOD, IF ANY.

Hey Mike, it is funny but sometimes these folks really believe what they hear or think they know about us. I used to get upset when some white person would make warhoop sounds but now i just take it in stride. I do not bring myself down to their level. Heres wishing you and the Santee Sioux Nation a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I know where you are coming from cousin. When we were younger, the neighborhood kids woudl call us "Greasy Greeks", and would make fun of us because we kept goats( my golks bought them to provide milk for those of us who couldn't tolerate cow's milk and they would make feta cheese, and ricotta cheese).

LET US NOT FORGET AT THE NEW YEAR, THERE ARE RELATIVES THAT NEED HELP ON THE RESERVATIONS THAT MIGHT NOT BE AS FORTUNATE AS WE ARE AT THE MOMENT. IF YOU CAN PLEASE SHARE WITH OUR LESS FORTUNATE RELATIVES, ANYWAY YOU CAN. TIM GIAGO'S ARTICLE IS SO INFORMATIVE, IT IS AN OLD ARTICLE BUT WORTH THE READ.
The Huffington Post.. Tim Giago| The "Poorest County in America
The United States Census of 1980 moved in a different direction when it began to post a census within a census on different social conditions in the United States.
For instance, the Census of 1980 named the 10 poorest counties in America.
Buzz up!on Yahoo! The Pine Ridge Reservation, situated in the heart of Shannon County, South Dakota, was declared the "Poorest County in America." It was one occasion when a people had no reason at all to stand up and shout, "Hey, we're number one!"
To address the extreme poverty on many Indian reservations let's, for the moment, set aside the financial boomtowns of the casino rich Indian nations. We should keep in mind that while some Indian nations have become extremely wealthy, many others, particularly those in the Northern Plains and in some portions of the Southwest, have remained the poorest of the poor in an otherwise booming Indian economy.
While most of the Pueblo Nations of New Mexico are having great success with their casinos, there are others like the Jemez Pueblo that do not have the luxury of being located on or near a major city or highway. And there are others that have decided not to open a casino, at least for the time being. While most Arizona Indian nations are booming, there are others such as the Navajo that are just now starting to make a move toward opening a casino and there is the Hopi Nation, made up of extremely traditional and religious people that are not considering building a casino at all.
In the Northern Plains tribes such as the Oglala Lakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation, the object of the 1980 Census naming them the "poorest county in America," the Sicangu of the Rosebud Reservation, the Crow Creek Sioux tribe and the tribes of North Dakota and Montana, are situated so far from a metropolitan population that although they do have functional casinos, are still struggling to survive.
We have to ask ourselves why, after 27 years since the 1980 Census, the Pine Ridge Reservation is still among the top ten poorest counties in America, and why three of the top ten poorest counties are located in South Dakota? What does that say about our elected Congressional delegation?
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know the reasons there is such poverty and what can be done to alleviate it. The lack of jobs, housing and healthcare are three of the main culprits. And how does one go about addressing these ills? First off, you bring economic development to provide jobs and second, you demand that Housing and Urban Development get off of its big fat a-- and provide livable housing, and third, you refurbish the Indian Health Care hospitals with adequate funding, improved facilities and more and better doctors. Doesn't this sound like something that can be accomplished in America?
Life expectancy on Pine Ridge, Rosebud, and Crow Creek and on some of the other Indian reservations of the Northern Plains and in some areas of the Southwest is in the 50s. Infant mortality is three times as high as in the rest of America. Diabetes is epidemic in Indian country no thanks to the United States Department of Agriculture for the high starch and sugar- loaded commodities distributed on these reservations for so many years.
I visited Andrew Cuomo in Washington, DC when he as the Secretary of HUD. Cuomo had visited the Pine Ridge Reservation in 2000 and lining the walls of his HUD office and hallways were enlarged photographs of Lakota people huddled in decrepit houses as many as four families to a two-bedroom house. Why were the pictures hanging on his walls when the very conditions they depicted are still prevalent on the Pine Ridge Reservation seven years later? While I sat in his office sipping coffee, Cuomo had his eye glued to the television set watching the latest count of "hanging chads" in Florida's election. He listened to me with half an ear.
I was in Cuomo's office to help bring jobs to the Pine Ridge Reservation. I told him I was willing to move my newspaper and printing plant to the reservation, along with 35 jobs, if he would see fit to have HUD build a facility to house it and contribute enough money to enable me to move the entire operation. Of course, nothing happened because Florida and the U. S. Supreme Court saw to it that Andrew Cuomo lost his job at HUD. Would it have made a difference if he had not?
The problems on the above reservations still exist and it is high time that our elected representatives move, in collusion with the private sector, to bring an economy to these very poor Indian reservations. It is time they fought for legislation to bring houses and better healthcare to the poorest of the poor in America.
I wrote last week about the Cultural Heritage Center at Cheyenne, Oklahoma to commemorate those slaughtered at the Washita and I asked that South Dakota's delegation come up with the funds to build a cultural center at the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre. I got an email from former Senator Tom Daschle asking, "what can I do?" and a phone call from the assistant for Senator Tim Johnson telling me that Senator Johnson was behind the idea 100 percent. I have yet to hear from Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) or from Senator John Thune (R-SD).
The extreme need for jobs, housing and healthcare are still requisite on the Indian reservations of the Northern Plains and Southwest, but finding the funds to construct a Cultural Heritage Center on the site of one of the worst massacres in American history would go a long way in showing what our elected representatives, in cooperation with the leadership of the Lakota people, can do to make a move in the right direction.
After that perhaps they can devote some time to helping alleviate the conditions that made Pine Ridge "the poorest county in America." ...

Geez sorry i am so behind but yes Dawn i hope pine ridges new admin will make a better change. I am sick of the old way things were done. As for the amount of people residing here i dont have a clue but its more than 25,000 so its quite a few that do not vote but complain when no changes are made. So hopefully my great aunt will make some good changes for us here.

Wakiyan,
Where'd you go, I haven't heard from you in a while. Hope life is treating you well. Have things gotten any better there at Pine Ridge or more of the same.
Is Russell still living around the corner, or did he move away. I left a message for him, to help Jamie with his friend. But haven't heard hide nor hair.
Tell your Mom and Grandma I said Hi. Haven't gotten any new jokes that I thought proper for them to read.
So sorry to hear that you have the flu, you didn't say if you had the real high fever. But the rest sure sounded like you really have the Swine Flu, hope the kiddies don't get it.
Just joined the Facebook that you asked me into before. I thought since I like to communicate with people, I could reach out to other avenues. I know I have several relatives that are always saying they have fun on Facebook, saw other Oyate friends and relatives when I joined. Not real sure how to work it yet. But I'll figure it out. Mostly would like to contact old High School friends, that I have lost contact with. I understand it is a social network.
But I might also meet people who like to talk politics without getting upset with each other, for each of own opinions. Open minded people. To discuss as CNN this morning about the war in Afghanistan-- Such as Zakaria's interviewing an interesting guy and his views about the civil war there in Afghanistan.
Unfortunately, there are more people that would rather keep their heads in the sand, and the comfort of their world. But the world in out there, so I decided rather than watching these TV programs of today, I would try to be more informed. I enjoy some of the TV also, but CNN or BBC is always on. Many I know say, well it just depresses me to watch the news. But I would rather be informed, than not. I'm not a know it all. Just would like to know more.
There I go on my soap box, again. But I mean well and I especially mean well for our people. We can't drink our problems away, because the problems will still be there after the hangover.
Hope you get better, but don't overdo to soon, as I understand you might get a relapse. Hope to hear from you later.

Wakiyan and Matthew 503,
Nice to see you both on Facebook, Rez talk is so dead. Thought I would get something on here.

I guess as I was working on this situation before his immediate family decided to do some thing about it...I will step back now and let them do the rest. Only when I step up do something, I lead the way...lol why can't it be the other way around? People, I just have to take a seat on how things are done here. Get this...you go to jail, get out and can't get a job now any where, this guy or lady goes, the door is shut on him or her...Is this person educated you ask? Yes. Do they possess GED or High school Diploma? Yes and maybe no. Now your back ground check holds you back from getting on the road to taking care of bills and providing a roof over your head...Oh wait! We can't hire you because of your background...you been to jail or prison. SORRY. Why does our system set up to fail us like that? Can't we the people make or propose a bill to help those that may have had to accept special conditions according to their imprisonment? People that live in the United States need help in this area...
What is the use of living here if you get rejected because the place you want to work for will not accept you to work there, because you was in jail 9 yrs ago and PAID the price for it fairly? isn't there a never mind searching after 7 yrs in some states on background checks. I am curious about this and would like to know how to help the less fortunate...starting with a brain storm and maybe a plan and a goal to help them...what does Obama think of this??
dawnday...yeah, he is getting some help on it so I backed off...thanks to all who helped me with this.
